BACKGROUND
The presence of Aggregated Lymphoid Nodules Area (ALNA) is a notable anatomical characteristic observed in the abomasum of Bactrian camels. This area is comprised of two separate regions, namely the Reticular Mucosal Folds Region (RMFR) and the Longitudinal Mucosal Folds Region (LMFR). The histological properties of ALNA exhibit significant similarities to those of Peyer's patches (PPs) found in the gastrointestinal system. The functional characteristics of ALNA were examined in relation to mucosal immunity in the gastrointestinal system.
RESULTS
We used iTRAQ-based proteomic analysis on twelve Bactrian camels to measure the amount of proteins expressed in ALNA. In the experiment, we sampled the RMFR and LMFR separately from the ALNA and compared their proteomic quantification results with samples from the PPs. A total of 1253 proteins were identified, among which 39 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were found between RMFR and PPs, 33 DEPs were found between LMFR and PPs, and 22 DEPs were found between LMFR and RMFR. The proteins FLNA, MYH11, and HSPB1 were chosen for validation using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the observed expression profiles were found to be in agreement with the results obtained from the iTRAQ study. The InnateDB database was utilized to get data pertaining to immune-associated proteins in ALNA. It was observed that a significant proportion, specifically 76.6%, of these proteins were found to be associated with the same orthogroups as human immune-related genes. These proteins are acknowledged to be associated with a diverse range of functions, encompassing the uptake, processing and presentation of antigens, activation of lymphocytes, the signaling pathways of T-cell and B-cell receptors, and the control of actin polymerization.
CONCLUSIONS
The experimental results suggest that there are parallels in the immune-related proteins found in ALNA and PPs. Although there are variations in the structures of LMFR and RMFR, the proteins produced in both structures exhibit a high degree of similarity and perform comparable functions in the context of mucosal immune responses.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of health treatment cost of Holstein cows from producer-recorded health treatments in 8 herds over an 8-yr period of time. Genetic parameters of health treatment cost were estimated in first ( = 2,214), second ( = 1,487) and third ( = 800) parities of US Holstein cows. The health treatments were uniformly defined and consistently recorded by 8 high-performance dairy herds in Minnesota from 2008 to 2015. A fixed treatment cost was assigned to 14 types of health treatments, and the cost included the mean veterinary expense obtained from the veterinary clinics that serviced the 8 herds, pharmaceuticals, and labor cost. The labor cost was $18/h, and the time incurred for each type of health treatment was determined from interviews with the herd owners. The 14 types of health treatment costs were partitioned into 5 categories: mastitis (including mastitis diagnostic test), reproduction (cystic ovary, retained placenta, and metritis), lameness (hoof treatments), metabolic (milk fever, displaced abomasum, ketosis, and digestive), and miscellaneous (respiratory, injury, and other). Health treatment cost for each cow was summed by category within lactation and also across categories within lactation. The estimates of heritability for health treatment cost were 0.13, 0.04, 0.10, 0.12, and 0.04 for the mastitis, reproduction, lameness, metabolic, and miscellaneous categories, respectively, in first parity. Genetic correlations between categories of health treatment cost in first parity were greatest for mastitis and reproduction ( = 0.85); however, phenotypic correlations between all categories were small ( < 0.16). Total health treatment cost had a large genetic correlation with somatic cell score (0.93) and 305-d milk production (0.44) in first parity; however, the genetic correlation (-0.60) between total health treatment cost and udder depth in first parity indicated a genetic relationship exists between shallow udders and less total health treatment cost. Total health treatment cost across categories had a heritability estimate of 0.25 in first parity, 0.16 in second parity, and 0.17 in third parity. Consequently, genetic selection for reduced health treatment cost should be possible by using producer-recorded health treatment records supplemented with treatment costs.

The development of the four stomachs of yak is closely related to its health and performance, however the underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we systematically analyzed mRNAs of four stomachs in five growth time points [0 day, 20 days, 60 days, 15 months and 3 years (adult)] of yaks. Overall, the expression patterns of DEmRNAs were unique at 0 d, similar at 20 d and 60 d, and similar at 15 m and adult in four stomachs. The expression pattern in abomasum was markedly different from that in rumen, reticulum and omasum. Short Time-series Expression Miner (STEM) analysis demonstrated that multi-model spectra are drastically enriched over time in four stomachs. All the identified mRNAs in rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum were classified into 6, 4, 7, and 5 cluster profiles, respectively. Modules 9, 38, and 41 were the most significant three colored modules. By weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), a total of 5,486 genes were categorized into 10 modules. , , , and were the hub genes of the turquoise module, and , , , , and were the hub genes of the blue module. Furthermore, functional KEGG enrichment analysis suggested that the turquoise module was involved in gastric acid secretion, sphingolipid metabolism, ether lipid metabolism, etc., and the blue module was enriched in pancreatic secretion, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, and starch and sucrose metabolism, etc. Our study aims to lay a molecular basis for the study of the physiological functions of rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum in yaks. It can further elucidate the important roles of these mRNAs in regulation of growth, development and metabolism in yaks, and to provide a theoretical basis for age-appropriate weaning and supplementary feeding in yaks.

Supplementation of oral Ca via blanket administration of an oral Ca bolus at 0 and 24 h after calving has shown limited success in increasing production and minimizing adverse health events. Recent evidence that reductions in blood Ca at 4 d in milk (DIM) are more closely associated with negative outcomes than hypocalcemia at 0 to 24 h postpartum might explain this lack of Ca bolus efficacy. Therefore, our primary objective was to explore the effect of delayed oral Ca bolus supplementation on milk production, with secondary objectives of exploring the effects on disease incidence and postpartum blood Ca dynamics. We conducted a randomized controlled trial on multiparous Holstein cows (n = 998) from 4 herds in New York. At calving, cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: (1) control, no supplemental Ca at or around parturition (CON; n = 343); (2) conventional bolus, an oral Ca bolus containing 43 g of Ca at calving and 24 h later (BOL-C; n = 330); or (3) delayed bolus, an oral Ca bolus containing 43 g of Ca at 48 and 72 h after calving (BOL-D; n = 325). We created generalized linear mixed models to analyze differences in milk yield for the first 10 wk of lactation and serum total Ca (tCa) at 1 and 4 DIM between treatment groups; multivariable Poisson regression models were used to analyze adverse event outcomes (metritis, displaced abomasum, herd removal, or a combination of one or more of the 3) in the first 30 DIM. Milk yield increased by week and was not affected by treatment. However, a treatment by parity group interaction for milk yield showed that BOL-D cows in the third parity produced more milk than third-parity BOL-C or CON cows (BOL-D = 52.0 kg/d, 95% confidence interval [50.6, 53.4] kg/d, BOL-C = 47.9 [46.3, 49.5] kg/d, CON = 49.8 [48.2, 51.2] kg/d). The incidence of adverse health events was similar between treatments (BOL-D = 3.7%, BOL-C = 3.7%, CON = 3.6%). Serum tCa was lower at 1 than 4 DIM, and we detected no difference in tCa between treatment groups. Our findings suggest that delaying oral Ca bolus supplementation has limited influence on blood Ca concentrations but may be beneficial to cohorts of cows as a targeted prophylactic supplement to support milk production.

BACKGROUND
Displaced abomasum (DA) is one of the most important metabolic disorders of dairy cattle. In DA, ischaemic damage may occur as a result of impaired perfusion due to abomasal displacement, which may result in gastrointestinal mucosal damage.
OBJECTIVE
Investigation of gastrointestinal tissue damage in cattle with right displacement of the abomasum (RDA) and left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) using intestinal-related biomarkers.
METHODS
Forty-eight DA (24 LDA, 24 RDA) and 15 healthy Holstein dairy cows were enrolled between March 2021 and July 2022. Serum biomarkers including gamma-enteric smooth muscle actin (ACTG-2), liver-fatty acid binding proteins (L-FABP), platelet activating factor (PAF), trefoil factor-3 (TFF-3), leptin, claudin-3 and interleukin-8 (IL-8) concentrations were measured from venous blood samples.
RESULTS
L-FABP concentrations in the LDA group and TFF-3 concentrations in the RDA group were lower than in the control group. The leptin concentration of the RDA group was higher than that of the other groups. There was a negative correlation between lactate, leptin and IL-8 concentrations. There was a negative correlation between lactate and TFF-3, whereas leptin and lactate were positively correlated. Leptin was the more reliable biomarker for discriminating between RDA and LDA cases.
CONCLUSION
Changes in serum L-FABP, TFF-3 and leptin concentrations in cattle with DA may reflect acute intestinal injury and the subsequent repair phase. However, these biomarkers had poor diagnostic performance in discriminating between healthy and cattle with DA, while leptin emerged as the most useful marker in differentiating LDA from RDA cases.

Fundus image registration is crucial in eye disease examination, as it enables the alignment of overlapping fundus images, facilitating a comprehensive assessment of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, where a single image's limited field of view might be insufficient. By combining multiple images, the field of view for retinal analysis is extended, and resolution is enhanced through super-resolution imaging. Moreover, this method facilitates patient follow-up through longitudinal studies. This paper proposes a straightforward method for fundus image registration based on bifurcations, which serve as prominent landmarks. The approach aims to establish a baseline for fundus image registration using these landmarks as feature points, addressing the current challenge of validation in this field. The proposed approach involves the use of a robust vascular tree segmentation method to detect feature points within a specified range. The method involves coarse vessel segmentation to analyze patterns in the skeleton of the segmentation foreground, followed by feature description based on the generation of a histogram of oriented gradients and determination of image relation through a transformation matrix. Image blending produces a seamless registered image. Evaluation on the FIRE dataset using registration error as the key parameter for accuracy demonstrates the method's effectiveness. The results show the superior performance of the proposed method compared to other techniques using vessel-based feature extraction or partially based on SURF, achieving an area under the curve of 0.526 for the entire FIRE dataset.

The displacement of the abomasum to the right (RDA) is a common condition regularly encountered in dairy cows, which requires urgent surgical correction. The survival of the patient primarily depends on early diagnosis and timely treatment, but other factors contributing to the outcome have been discussed in the literature. The objective of this study was to identify preoperative clinical, hematological, as well as intraoperative parameters that are associated with the prognosis of cows with RDA or abomasal volvulus (AV). This retrospective study included patients admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital over a period of 6 years with a diagnosis of RDA or AV. A total of 234 cows were included, of which 193 were discharged after treatment and thus classified as survivors. In contrast, 41 cases died or were euthanized during or after surgery and were categorized as non-survivors. Non-survivors showed more severe dehydration, higher heart rate, lower sodium, as well as higher L-lactate and phosphorus concentration in their blood prior to surgery compared with the survivors. During surgery, the abomasum of non-survivors was markedly dilated and twisted more frequently than in survivors. The results presented here can facilitate the early identification of animals with poor prognosis requiring more intensive peri- and postoperative care.

Helminth infection was analysed at necropsy and coprology in a total of 54 roe deer from the province of Grosseto (central Italy) between 2018 - 2020. Age and sex data were recorded for each deer for a total of 31 adults (23 females, 8 males) and 23 juveniles (11 females, 12 males). The results on the small intestine (51 samples) highlighted that nematodes belonging to the species were the most prevalent parasite (41.2 %), followed by the cestode (7.8 %). The large intestine results (52 samples) showed spp. (53.8 %), (50 %) and (26.9 %). In the abomasum, only (17.9 %) was found. Of the 34 samples analysed by bronchopulmonary, only the lung of an adult female was positive for spp. In two livers out of 33 samples analysed, nematodes of the species were found on the surface. Copropositivity was observed in 45 of the 52 faecal samples analysed. The results of the present study indicate that the roe deer is host to several species of parasites, which are also common in other cervids and domestic ruminants. Statistical testing highlighted a significant difference between mean intensities in males and females.

The successful design of strategic control measures against the blood-sucking gastrointestinal nematode, in small ruminants can be facilitated by revealing its general features from morphology to the molecular level. In the south Gujarat region of India, a total of 2408 were collected from 84 slaughtered sheep's abomasum, consisting of 347 males and 2061 females (1:6 ratio) (p<0.05). Furthermore, 726 were collected from 61 goats, comprising 145 males and 581 females (1:4 ratio) (p<0.05). The male worms were approximately 12±0.06 mm long, while female worms were about 20±0.09 mm long. The vulvar morphotypes of the female worms were found to be 17.7% linguiform, 76.6 % knobbed/button (p<0.05), and 5.7 % smooth type, demonstrating common features of . The nucleotide sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS-1) of 165 bp or ITS-2 plus of 256 bp were aligned, and it was found that the genotypes of male and female specimens of either sheep or goat origin were identical, with a 100 % match. The present isolates shared >95 % and >94 % homology with published sequences of ITS-1 and ITS-2 plus of , respectively, with more nucleotide transitions than transversions in the aligned sequences. The reconstructed phylogram of either ITS-1 or ITS-2 plus revealed two major clades, one for and another for other nematodes, with showing its proximity with the clade of . The study established the role of morphological and molecular features in identifying and differentiating parasite at the local level.

Emerging alternatives to traditional anthelmintics: the in vitro antiparasitic activity of silver and selenium nanoparticles, and pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel extract against Haemonchus contortus.
Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal nematodes, causing health problems and economic losses in ruminants. Nanotechnology holds great promise as a field of science, with potential applications in veterinary medicine. This study investigated the in vitro anthelmintic activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), and pomegranate peel extract (Punica granatum; PPE) on different stages of H. contortus: eggs, larvae, and adults. The in vitro anthelmintic efficacy was evaluated using the egg hatching inhibition assay (EHA), the third larval stage paralysis assay (LPA), and the adult worm motility inhibition assay (WMI). Six dilutions of PPE were utilized for EHA, LPA, and WMI, ranging from 0.25 to 6 mg/ml. AgNPs dilutions ranged from 0.00001 to 1.0 μg/ml for EHA and LPA and 1 to 25 μg/ml for WMI. SeNPs were utilized at dilutions of 1, 5, 10, and 15 μg/ml for EHA, LPA, and WMI. The results showed that the lowest concentration of AgNPs, SeNPs, and PPE significantly inhibited egg hatching. To further assess larvicidal activity, AgNPs at the highest concentration of 1 μg/ml induced a strong larvicidal effect, as did SeNPs at the lowest concentration. On the contrary, PPE displayed a significant larvicidal effect at 1 mg/ml compared to the control. The percentage mortality of adult H. contortus was measured as follows (mortality (%) = the number of dead adult H. contortus/total number of adult H. contortus per test × 100). The death of the adult H. contortus was determined by the absence of motility. Adult H. contortus mortality percentage was also significantly affected by all three agents when compared to the control. The AgNPs, SeNPs, and PPE have effective antiparasitic activity on gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes. These results provide evidence of the excellent antiparasitic properties of AgNPs, SeNPs, and PPE, demonstrating their effectiveness in controlling eggs, larvae, and adult H. contortus in vitro.
