Climate change significantly impacted on the survival, development, distribution, and abundance of living organisms. The Chinese serow , known as the "four unlike," is a Class II nationally protected species in China. In this study, we predicted the geographical suitability of under current and future climatic conditions using MaxEnt. The model simulations resulted in area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values above 0.9 for both current and future climate scenarios, indicating the excellent performance, high accuracy, and credibility of the MaxEnt model. The results also showed that annual precipitation (Bio12), slope, elevation, and mean temperature of wettest quarter (Bio8) were the key environmental variables affecting the distribution of , with contributions of 31.2%, 26.4%, 11%, and 10.3%, respectively. The moderately and highly suitable habitats were mainly located in the moist area of China, with a total area of 34.56 × 10 and 16.61 × 10 km, respectively. Under future climate change scenarios, the areas of suitability of showed an increasing trend. The geometric center of the total suitable habitats of would show the trend of northwest expansion and southeast contraction. These findings could provide a theoretical reference for the protection of in the future.

This comprehensive study examines primary production (PP) within the Spitsbergen fjords, Hornsund, and Kongsfjord, over a 25-year period (1994-2019), across 45 stations and 348 incubation levels at various depths. PP and hydrological parameters were measured at 28 sampling stations in Kongsfjorden and 17 in Hornsund, with the locations of "Glacier," "Inner," and "Outer" zones defined to reflect the varying influence of glacial meltwater. Our study revealed spatial and temporal variability in PP, both at the surface and within the water column with very high depth resolution. The highest PP values were observed in the Glacier and Inner zones of Hornsund, particularly in the water layer up to 3 m depth, exceeding 20 mgC m h. A notable decline in PP with increasing depth was observed in both fjords, with the Glacier zones displaying the highest productivity at the surface. The study also highlights the influence of glacial meltwater on surface water conditions, affecting the PP in the upper layers of both fjords. The observed gradient in the depth of maximum PP toward the mouth of the fjord varied between the two fjords, with Kongsjord displaying more dynamic variations. The spatial distribution of integrated primary production (Pi) suggested lower productivity in the glacial regions, likely due to light limitation caused by high concentrations of mineral particulate matter. The values of Pi were considerably higher in Hornsund, approximately twice as high overall, with specific emphasis on the Glacier and Inner zones where Pi values were about 6.5 and 2.5 times higher, respectively, when compared to those observed in Kongsfjord.

OBJECTIVE
This study aimed to characterize the changing landscape of circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineages in the local community of Hong Kong throughout 2022. We examined how adjustments to quarantine arrangements influenced the transmission pattern of Omicron variants in a city with relatively rigorous social distancing measures at that time.
METHODS
In 2022, a total of 4684 local SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sequenced using the Oxford Nanopore GridION sequencer. SARS-CoV-2 consensus genomes were generated by MAFFT, and the maximum likelihood phylogeny of these genomes was determined using IQ-TREE. The dynamic changes in lineages were depicted in a time tree created by Nextstrain. Statistical analysis was conducted to assess the correlation between changes in the number of lineages and adjustments to quarantine arrangements.
RESULTS
By the end of 2022, a total of 83 SARS-CoV-2 lineages were identified in the community. The increase in the number of new lineages was significantly associated with the relaxation of quarantine arrangements (One-way ANOVA, F(5, 47) = 18.233, < 0.001)). Over time, Omicron BA.5 sub-lineages replaced BA.2.2 and became the predominant Omicron variants in Hong Kong. The influx of new lineages reshaped the dynamics of Omicron variants in the community without fluctuating the death rate and hospitalization rate (One-way ANOVA, F(5, 47) = 2.037, = 0.091).
CONCLUSION
This study revealed that even with an extended mandatory quarantine period for incoming travelers, it may not be feasible to completely prevent the introduction and subsequent community spread of highly contagious Omicron variants. Ongoing molecular surveillance of COVID-19 remains essential to monitor the emergence of new recombinant variants.

Comparative Study
In mesoscale eddies, the chemical properties and biological composition are different from those in the surrounding water due to their unique physical processes. The mechanism of physical-biological coupling in warm-core eddies is unclear, especially because no studies have examined the effects of environmental factors on bacteria and viruses. The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of an anticyclonic warm eddy on the relationship between bacterial and viral abundances, as well as viral activity (viral production), at different depths. At the core of the warm eddy, the bacterial abundance (0.48 to 2.82 × 10 cells mL) fluctuated less than that outside the eddy (1.12 to 7.03 × 10 cells mL). In particular, there was a four-fold higher viral-bacterial abundance ratio (VBR) estimated within the eddy, below the layer of the deep chlorophyll maximum, than outside the eddy. An anticyclonic warm eddy with downwelling at its center may contribute to viruses being transmitted directly into the deep ocean through adsorption on particulate organic matter while sinking. Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the interaction between bacterial and viral abundances and their ecological mechanisms within a warm eddy.

The adsorption mechanism of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) can provide theoretical guidance for their practical applications in different environments. However, there has been limited research on the mechanism of attapulgite-sodium polyacrylate. This research aimed to compare the Cd(II) adsorption characteristics and water retention properties of organic-inorganic composite SAP (attapulgite-sodium polyacrylate, OSAP) and organic SAP (polyacrylamide, JSAP). Batch experiments were used to investigate the kinetics of Cd(II) adsorption, as well as the thermodynamic properties and factors influencing these properties. The results show that the Cd(II) adsorption capacity was directly proportional to the pH value. The maximum adsorption capacities of OSAP and JSAP were of 770 and 345 mg·g. The Cd(II) adsorption for OSAP and JSAP conformed to the Langmuir and the quasi-second-order kinetic model. This indicates that chemical adsorption is the primary mechanism. The adsorption process was endothermic (ΔH > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG < 0). The water adsorption ratios of OSAP and SAP were 474.8 and 152.6 in pure water. The ratio decreases with the increase in Cd(II) concentration. OSAP and JSAP retained 67.23% and 38.37% of the initial water adsorption after six iterations of water adsorption. Hence, OSAP is more suitable than JSAP for agricultural and environmental ecological restoration in arid and semi-arid regions.

Traditional metal-plastic dissimilar welding methods directly heat the metal workpiece, which may cause potential thermal damage to the metal workpiece. Ultrasonic extruded weld-riveting (UEWR) is a relatively new method for dissimilar joining of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) and metal. In this method, the CFRTP workpiece is melted using the ultrasonic effect and is squeezed into prefabricated holes in the metal workpiece to form a rivet structure. In this method, the metal workpiece is not directly heated, and potential high-temperature losses can be avoided. This paper investigates the process characterizations of UERW of AZ31B magnesium alloy to carbon fiber-reinforced PA66. The process parameters are optimized by the Taguchi method. The joint formation process is analyzed based on the fiber distribution in the cross-sections of joints. The effects of welding parameters on the joint microstructure and fracture surface morphology are discussed. The results show that a stepped amplitude strategy (40 μm amplitude in the first stage and 56 μm amplitude in the second stage) could balance the joint strength and joint appearance. Insufficient (welding energy < 2600 J or amplitude-A < 50%) or excessive (welding energy > 2800 J or amplitude-A > 50%) welding parameters lead to the formation of porous defects. Three fracture modes are identified according to the fracture surface analysis. The maximum tensile shear strength of joints at the optimal parameters is about 56.5 ± 6.2 MPa.

In this work, we focused on the bioactivity and antibacterial behavior of PLA-based electrospun fibers, efibers, reinforced with both MgO and Mg(OH) nanoparticles, NPs. The evolution of PLA-based efibers was followed in terms of morphology, FTIR, XRD, and visual appearance. The bioactivity was discussed in terms of hydroxyapatite growth after 28 days, considered as T28, of immersion in simulated body fluid, SBF. In particular, the biomineralization process evidenced after immersion in SBF started at T14 in both systems. The number of precipitated crystals increased by increasing the amount of both NPs. The chemical composition of the precipitated crystals was also characterized in terms of the Ca/P molar ratio after T28 of immersion in SBF, indicating the presence of hydroxyapatite on the surface of both reinforced efibers. Moreover, a reduction in the average diameter of the PLA-based efibers was observed, reaching a maximum reduction of 46 and 60% in the average diameter of neat PLA and PLA:OLA efibers, respectively, after 28 days of immersion in SBF. The antibacterial behavior of the MgO and Mg(OH) NPs in the PLA-based electrospun fibers was tested against , , as the Gram-negative bacteria, and , , as the Gram-positive bacteria, obtaining the best antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacteria of 21 ± 2% and 34 ± 6% for the highest concentration of MgO and Mg(OH) NPs, respectively.

The 6935M Sprint Quattro Secure S and 6947M Sprint Quattro Secure are high voltage leads designed to administer a maximum of 40 joules of energy for terminating ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Both leads utilize silicone insulation and a polyurethane outer coating. The inner coil is shielded with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubing, while other conductors are enveloped in ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), contributing to the structural integrity and functionality of these leads. Polyurethane is a preferred material for the outer insulation of cardiac leads due to its flexibility and biocompatibility, while silicone rubber ensures chemical stability within the body, minimizing inflammatory or rejection responses. Thirteen implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) leads were obtained from the Wright State University Anatomical Gift Program. The as-received devices exhibited varied in vivo implantation durations ranging from less than a month to 89 months, with an average in vivo duration of 41 ± 27 months. Tests were conducted using the Test Resources Q series system, ensuring compliance with ASTM Standard D 1708-02a and ASTM Standard D 412-06a. During testing, a load was applied to the intact lead, with careful inspection for surface defects before each test. Results of load to failure, percentage elongation, percentage elongation at 5 N, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity were calculated. The findings revealed no significant differences in these parameters across all in vivo exposure durations. The residual properties of these ICD leads demonstrated remarkable stability and performance over a wide range of in vivo exposure durations, with no statistically significant degradation or performance changes observed.

Frictionally induced vibrations in rubber are readily triggered due to their lower stiffness and higher elasticity. This study developed a numerical model to investigate the frictional vibration of a rubber block with a groove on its side surface against an aluminum disc. The results indicate that a backside groove (GB) on the block significantly enhances vibration attenuation, with a decay time 0.6 s faster than a non-grooved (NG) block, despite a potentially higher initial vibrational amplitude. In contrast, a frontside groove (GF) results in persistent frictional oscillations, with the steady-state time being similar for both GB and GF configurations. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the GB's effectiveness in reducing the maximum energy imparted to the block initially, dissipating vibrational energy more swiftly, and distributing the contact stress more uniformly. The discrepancies in frictional forces between the conducted experiment and the simulation for the NG, GB and GF cases were 11.3%, 9.3% and 12.1%, respectively, quantitatively indicating the moderate precision of the results from the simulation. The insights gained from this study hold promise for enriching methods of mitigating vibrations arising from rubber friction.

Among the many benefits of implementing numerical analysis on real objects, economic and environmental considerations are likely the most important ones. Nonetheless, it is also crucial to constrain the duration and space necessary for conducting experimental investigations. Although these benefits are clear, the applicability of such models must be appropriately verified. This research subjected validation of numerical models depicting the behavior of unstrengthened and strengthened laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams. As a reinforcement, a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet and laminates were used. Experiments were conducted on full-scale members within the framework of the so-called four-point bending testing method. Numerical simulations were performed using the Abaqus software. Two types of material models were examined for laminated veneer lumber: linearly elastic and linearly elastic-perfectly plastic with Hill's yield criterion. A distinction was made in the material properties of carbon composites based on their location on the height of the cross-section. The outlined numerical models accurately depict the behavior of real structural elements. The precision of predicting load-bearing capacity amounts to a few percent for strengthened beams and a maximum of eleven percent for unstrengthened beams. The relative deviation between numerical and experimental values of bending stiffness was at a maximum of seven percent. Applying the elastic-plastic model enables accurate representation of the load versus deflection relation and the distribution of stress and deformation of strengthened beams. Based on the findings, directives were provided for further optimization of the positioning of composite reinforcement along the span of the beam. Reinforcement design of existing laminated veneer lumber members can be made using presented methodology.
