BACKGROUND
Midwives may be key stakeholders to improve perinatal mental healthcare (PMHC). Three systematic reviews considered midwives' educational needs in perinatal mental health (PMH) or related interventions with a focus on depression or anxiety. This systematic review aims to review: 1) midwives' educational/training needs in PMH; 2) the training programs in PMH and their effectiveness in improving PMHC.
METHODS
We searched six electronic databases using a search strategy designed by a biomedical information specialist. Inclusion criteria were: (1) focus on midwives; (2) reporting on training needs in PMH, perinatal mental health problems or related conditions or training programs; (3) using quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods design. We used the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool for study quality.
RESULTS
Of 4969 articles screened, 66 papers met eligibility criteria (47 on knowledge, skills or attitudes and 19 on training programs). Study quality was low to moderate in most studies. We found that midwives' understanding of their role in PMHC (e.g. finding meaning in opening discussions about PMH; perception that screening, referral and support is part of their routine clinical duties) is determinant. Training programs had positive effects on proximal outcomes (e.g. knowledge) and contrasted effects on distal outcomes (e.g. number of referrals).
CONCLUSIONS
This review generated novel insights to inform initial and continuous education curriculums on PMH (e.g. focus on midwives' understanding on their role in PMHC or content on person-centered care).

Nummular eczema, a chronic dermatitis characterized by coin-shaped lesions, was first documented in 1857. However, its pathophysiological characteristics are still not well known. To investigate differences in the regulation of the desquamation process in the stratum corneum of lesional and nonlesional skin of patients with nummular eczema and healthy control subjects, tape-stripped stratum corneum samples from patients with nummular eczema and healthy volunteers were analysed using immunofluorescence staining and western blot analysis. In the nummular eczema lesional skin, expression of desmoglein-1, desmocollin-1, and corneodesmosin exhibited a disorganized, dense or partially diffuse non-peripheral pattern with increased intensity, compared with the peripheral patterns observed in healthy or nonlesional skin, suggesting the impaired desquamation process in nummular eczema. Furthermore, although the expression of the desquamation-related serine proteases, kallikrein-related peptidase 7 and 5, was increased in nummular eczema lesional skin, the immunofluorescence staining of lympho-epithelial Kazal-type-related inhibitor-1, an endogenous inhibitor of various kallikrein-related peptidases, and its fragments were significantly increased in the nummular eczema lesional skin, suggesting its contribution to the inhibition of corneodesmosomal degradation. Therefore, the increased detection of corneodesmosomal proteins in nummular eczema lesions may be due to the increased amount of the fragments of lympho-epithelial Kazal-type-related inhibitor-1, which could contribute to delayed desquamation.

The Myoviridae cyanophage A-1(L) specifically infects the model cyanobacteria Anabaena sp. PCC 7120. Following our recent report on the capsid structure of A-1(L), here we present the high-resolution cryo-EM structure of its intact tail machine including the neck, tail and attached fibers. Besides the dodecameric portal, the neck contains a canonical hexamer connected to a unique pentadecamer that anchors five extended bead-chain-like neck fibers. The 1045-Å-long contractile tail is composed of a helical bundle of tape measure proteins surrounded by a layer of tube proteins and a layer of sheath proteins, ended with a five-component baseplate. The six long and six short tail fibers are folded back pairwise, each with one end anchoring to the baseplate and the distal end pointing to the capsid. Structural analysis combined with biochemical assays further enable us to identify the dual hydrolytic activities of the baseplate hub, in addition to two host receptor binding domains in the tail fibers. Moreover, the structure of the intact A-1(L) also helps us to reannotate its genome. These findings will facilitate the application of A-1(L) as a chassis cyanophage in synthetic biology.

Tracking enteric pathogen contamination from on-site sanitation facilities to groundwater in selected rural areas of Vhembe District Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
Groundwater is valued as a source of potable water, although it is vulnerable to environmental pollution. The aim of this study was to track enteric pathogen contamination from on-site sanitation (OSS) facilities to 70 household boreholes used by four villages of the Vhembe District Municipality. Two objectives were pursued: to measure the lateral distance between the borehole and the sanitation facilities in household yards, and to track the enteric pathogens. The borehole abstraction point and OSS system distance were determined using a steel measuring tape. Real-time PCR was used to track , typhimurium, , and enterotoxigenic (ETEC) from Wastewater (WW) from domestic septic tank and sludge from pit latrines to boreholes. was used as an indicator of faecal contamination. Results showed that 25% of households kept a distance of ≥50 m between the OSS facilities and the boreholes. In total, 87.5% of household boreholes in the rainy season and 72.5% in the dry season were contaminated with and pathogenic bacteria: , , and ETEC. The concentrations of the pathogens ranged from 2.03 to 2.12 LogEGC/100 mL. A very weak (r = -0.093) to moderate (r = -0.541) association was found between pathogens in groundwater and on-site sanitation systems (WW from septic tank and sludge from pit latrine). This suggests that the pathogens were not present in the sanitation compartment when they were found in the groundwater and vice versa. Moreover, a very weak (r = 0.007) to moderate (r = 0.525) association was found between the detected contaminants in groundwater and the lateral distance between the OSS facilities and the boreholes. The pathogens detected in all samples showed consistent concentrations, suggesting potential contamination from OSS systems' waste, possibly in groundwater, indicating potential contamination. The siting of OSS facilities at the yards in this study appeared to have a slight influence on the contaminants detected in groundwater. This study calls for an education program to be implemented by the Water and Sanitation Services Authorities to prevent contamination of groundwater and the risk of waterborne diseases.

BACKGROUND
Leg length discrepancy (LLD) is common in youth and is cause by several conditions. Long leg X-rays is the gold standard technique of measuring LLD. It is highly accurate and reliable compared to clinical method, but expose the subject to radiation. Instrumented Gait Analysis (IGA) serves not only as a means to measure joint kinematics during gait but also as a valuable tool for assessing Leg Length Discrepancy (LLD) while standing.
RESEARCH QUESTION
The purpose of this study was to compare different methods of determining the LLD in paediatric population. We hypothesize that IGA using joint centres is more accurate and precise than the tape measurement.
METHODS
Thirty-one patients with mean age 12.3 (SD=2.4) years were retrospectively included in the study. Their LLD varied between 0 and 36 mm. Three methods for determining LLD were compared to radiography using Bland-Altman analysis: 1. Tape measurement, 2. IGA, summarizing the distance from the spina iliaca anterior superior to the medial malleolus marker via the medial knee condyle marker. 3. IGA, summarizing distances between ankle, knee, and hip joints centres where the latter is calculated with different equations.
RESULTS
The IGA joints method performed better than the tape measurement or IGA markers method. The equations of Davis calculating the hip joint centre had the highest accuracy with mean difference to radiography of 0.7 mm (SD=6.3). The simple Harrington method resulted in a slightly reduced accuracy but higher precision 0.9 mm (SD=6.2). The Harrington method with leg length as input was less accurate 1.0 mm (SD=6.7), but was still considerably better than the tape measurement 1.8 mm (SD=7.0) or IGA markers method 1.1 mm (SD=11.5).
SIGNIFICANCE
Determining LLD with IGA using the distances between ankle, knee and hip joints centres is a feasible method that can be applied in clinical practice to calculate LLD.

Wet-tissue adhesives have long been attractive materials for realizing complicated biomedical functions. However, the hydration film on wet tissues can generate a boundary, forming hydrogen bonds with the adhesives that weaken adhesive strength. Introducing black phosphorus (BP) is believed to enhance the water absorption capacity of tape-type adhesives and effectively eliminate hydration layers between the tissue and adhesive. This study reports a composite patch integrated with BP nanosheets (CPB) for wet-tissue adhesion. The patch's improved water absorption and mechanical properties ensure its immediate and robust adhesion to wet tissues. Various bioapplications of CPB are demonstrated, such as rapid hemostasis (within ~1-2 seconds), monitoring of physical-activity and prevention of tumour-recurrence, all validated via in vivo studies. Given the good practicability, histocompatibility and biodegradability of CPB, the proposed patches hold significant promise for a wide range of biomedical applications.

This research was conducted to apply polyimide tape, which has the advantages of low price ans strong adhesive strength, to the neural electrode process. In addition, to maximize the low-cost characteristics, a fabrication process based on UV laser patterning rather than a photolithography process was introduced. The fabrication process started by attaching the gold sheet on the conductive double-sided tape without being torn or crushed. Then, the gold sheet and the double-sided tape were patterned together using UV laser. The patterned layer was transferred to the single-side polyimide tape. For insulation layer, electrode site opened single-sided polyimide tape was prepared. Polydimethylsiloxane was used as an adhesion layer, and alignment between electrode sites and opening sites was processed manually. The minimum line width achieved through the proposed fabrication process was approximately 100 m, and the sheet resistance of the conductive layer was 0.635 /sq. Measured cathodal charge storage capacity was 0.72 mC/cm and impedance at 1 kHz was 4.07 k/cm. Validation of fabricated electrode was confirmed by conducting 30 days accelerated soak test, flexibility test, adhesion test and ex vivo stimulation test. The novel flexible neural electrodes based on single-sided polyimide tape and UV laser patterned gold sheet was fabricated successfully. Conventional neural electrode fabrication processes based on polyimide substrate has a disadvantages such as long fabrication time, expensive costs, and probability of delamination between layers. However, the novel fabrication process which we introduced can overcome many shortcomings of existing processes, and offers great advantages such as simplicity of fabrication, inexpensiveness, flexibility and long-term reliability.

In healthy individuals, the intestinal epithelium forms a tight barrier to prevent gut bacteria from reaching blood circulation. To study the effect of probiotics, dietary compounds and drugs on gut barrier formation and disruption, human gut epithelial and bacterial cells can be cocultured in an in vitro model called the human microbial crosstalk (HuMiX) gut-on-a-chip system. Here, we present the design, fabrication and integration of thin-film electrodes into the HuMiX platform to measure transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) as a direct readout on barrier tightness in real-time. As various aspects of the HuMiX platform have already been set in their design, such as multiple compressible layers, uneven surfaces and nontransparent materials, a novel fabrication method was developed whereby thin-film metal electrodes were first deposited on flexible substrates and sequentially integrated with the HuMiX system via a transfer-tape approach. Moreover, to measure localized TEER along the cell culture chamber, we integrated multiple electrodes that were connected to an impedance analyzer via a multiplexer. We further developed a dynamic normalization method because the active measurement area depends on the measured TEER levels. The fabrication process and system setup can be applicable to other barrier-on-chip systems. As a proof-of-concept, we measured the barrier formation of a cancerous Caco-2 cell line in real-time, which was mapped at four spatially separated positions along the HuMiX culture area.

Spectral unmixing designates techniques that allow to decompose measured spectra into linear or non-linear combination of spectra of all targets (endmembers). This technique was initially developed for satellite applications, but it is now also widely used in biomedical applications. However, several drawbacks limit the use of these techniques with standard optical devices like RGB cameras. The devices need to be calibrated and a on the observed scene is often necessary. We propose a new method for estimating endmembers and their proportion automatically and without calibration of the acquisition device based on near separable non-negative matrix factorization. This method estimates the endmembers on spectra of absorbance changes presenting periodic events. This is very common in biomedical and medical optical imaging where hemodynamics dominate the absorbance fluctuations. We applied the method for identifying functional brain areas during neurosurgery using four different RGB cameras (an industrial camera, a smartphone and two surgical microscopes). Results obtained with the auto-calibration method were consistent with the intraoperative gold standards. Endmembers estimated with the auto-calibration method were similar to the calibrated endmembers used in the modified Beer-Lambert law. The similarity was particularly strong when both cardiac and respiratory periodic events were considered. This work can allow a widespread use of spectral imaging in the industrial or medical field.

Local anesthesia is administered to reduce pain-induced stress during dental treatment. However, local anesthetic injections are extremely painful; thus, methods to minimize this pain should be developed. Clinical studies on the pain-relieving effects of dental topical anesthetics have shown that few topical anesthetics provide fast and adequate pain relief without harming the oral mucosa. We examined the efficacy and safety of lidocaine tape, which has a potent topical anesthetic effect. Lidocaine tape was applied to the oral mucosa of 14 healthy participants, and its suppression effect was assessed by examining the pain intensity at the non-lidocaine tape-applied site using the visual analog evaluation scale and the verbal evaluation scale. Lidocaine tape application significantly reduced visual analog scale (VAS) scores during mucosal puncture compared to non-application ( < 0.01). Moreover, lidocaine tape application significantly reduced VAS scores during local anesthetic injection compared to non-application ( < 0.001). Adverse events were evaluated using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 5.0. No adverse events attributed to the application of lidocaine tape were observed in any participant. The findings in this study suggest that the application of lidocaine tape before infiltration anesthesia can reduce patient distress.
