Bacterial pigments (e.g., melanin and carotenoids) are considered to be among the most important secondary metabolites due to their various pharmacological activities against cancer and microbial resistance. Different pigmented bacterial strains were isolated from soil samples from El Mahmoudiyah governance and screened for their antimicrobial activity. The most promising pigment producer was identified as MW407006; furthermore, the produced pigment was identified as echinenone (β-carotene pigment). The pigment production was optimized through a central composite statistical design to maximize the biomass production, pigment concentration, and the antimicrobial activity. It was revealed that the most significant fermentation parameters were the glucose (as a carbon source) and asparagine (as a nitrogen source) concentrations. Nano-echinenone was synthesized using the ball milling technique, characterized, and finally assessed for potential antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antitumor activities. The data revealed that the synthesized nano-echinenone had higher antimicrobial activity than the crude pigment. The cytotoxic potency of echinenone and nano-echinenone was investigated in different cell lines (normal and cancer cells). The inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of cell death was observed in Caco-2 and Hep-G2 cells. The data proved that nano-echinenone is a suitable candidate for use as a safe antimicrobial and anti-hepatocellular-carcinoma agent.

INTRODUCTION
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common healthcare-associated infection which tends to cause increased length of morbidity, and mortality of patients, in addition to increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
METHODOLOGY
In the present study, urinary catheters were collected from a 50-year-old woman suffering from malignancy, bedridden, and having urinary incontinence. These catheters were processed in laboratory for isolation of bacteria using standard procedures.
RESULTS
Microbiological examination of the urinary catheters by biochemical, physiological, and VITEK 2 compact system revealed bacterial infection caused by Micrococcus lylae, a Gram-positive microorganism belonging to the family Micrococcacea. These Gram-positive bacteria were found to be susceptible to streptomycin, erythromycin, cefotaxime, neomycin, kanamycin, vancomycin, azithromycin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. Bacterial species were confirmed using 16s rRNA sequencing.
CONCLUSIONS
The sequences were found to have 99% similarity with Micrococcus lylae. This is the first report of isolation of Micrococcus lylae from the urinary catheter.

AIM
To compare the bacterial flora in palpebral conjunctiva of xerophthalmia seniors of Tibetan, Yi and Han, and analyze the differences and similarities of the bacteria.
METHODS
The test subjects were selected from 2 Tibetan, 2 Yi and 3 Han populated places, respectively. Total 222 seniors (444 eyes) with dry eye were examined. Secretion was collected from the palpebral conjunctiva of the subjects and then inoculated onto a blood agar plate. After 48h of incubation, the bacteria were examined for the differences and similarities between different ethnics.
RESULTS
There was no significant difference (P>0.05) of Gram stain characterization, dominant bacteria and number of the bacterial species present in oxrophthalmia patients among Tibetan, Yi and Han nationalities. The bacteria presented in all groups include staphylococcus epidermidis, corynebacterium, micrococcus luteu, intracellular bacteria sphingomonas, pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bacteria detected from the two of three ethnic groups were staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus haemolyticus, escherichia coli, kytococcus sedentarius, streptococcus angina, micrococcus lylae, and staphylococcus heads. The incidence rate of bacteria-associated dry eye in Tibetan population was significantly lower than that of Han and Yi population.
CONCLUSION
There is no significant difference in the bacteria flora of palpebral conjunctiva observed among dry eye elder populations of Tibetan, Yi and Han people. All of staphylococcus epidermidis, corynebacterium, micrococcus luteu, intracellular bacteria sphingomonas, pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus haemolyticus, escherichia coli, kytococcus sedentarius, streptococcus angina, micrococcus lylae and staphylococcus heads are common bacteria flora of the three nationalities inhibiting in this area.

The antimicrobial activity of vanillin against four bacteria (Pantoea agglomerans, Aeromonas enteropelogenes, Micrococcus lylae, and Sphingobacterium spiritovorun), four fungi (Alternaria sp., Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., and Fusarium sp.), and three unidentified yeasts isolated from spoiling fresh-cut mango slices was verified in laboratory media adjusted to pH 5.0. MICs of vanillin against the fungi (12.5 to 13.3 mM), bacteria (10 to 13.3 mM), and yeasts (5.0 to 6.7 mM) indicated that all the test species were sensitive to the antimicrobial effects of vanillin. Fresh-cut mango slices were dipped for 1 min in solutions containing 40 and 80 mM vanillin before being packaged in rigid trays and stored at 5 and 10 degrees C to verify the effects of vanillin on the development of the spoilage microflora. Microbiological analysis for up to 14 days of storage revealed that treatment with 80 mM vanillin significantly delayed (P < 0.05) the development of total aerobic bacteria and yeast and mold populations. Vanillin may be a practical preservative for processing fresh-cut mango.

The genetic heterogeneity of the nitrite reductase gene (nirK and nirS) fragments from denitrifying prokaryotes in a non-agricultural forest soil in Thailand was investigated using soil samples from the Plant Germplasm-Royal Initiation Project area in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. Soil bacteria were screened for denitrification activity and 13 (from 211) positive isolates were obtained and further evaluated for their ability to reduce nitrate and to accumulate or reduce nitrite. Three species with potentially previously unreported denitrifying activities were recorded. Analysis of the partial nirK and nirS sequences of these 13 strains revealed a diverse sequence heterogeneity in these two genes within the same environment and even potentially within the same host species, the potential existence of lateral gene transfer and the first record of both nirK and nirS homologues in one bacterial species. Finally, isolates of two species of bacteria (Corynebacterium propinquum and Micrococcus lylae) are recorded as denitrifiers for the first time.
