Sulfonamides are widely used antibiotics in agricultural production. However, the potential threat of these drugs to human health has increased global concern. Human serum albumin (HSA) is the main reservoir and transporter of exogenous small molecules in humans. In this study, the interaction between sulfadimethoxine (SMT) and human serum albumin (HSA) was studied using spectroscopy and computer simulation. Our results showed that the hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces drove SMT to enter the binding site I of HSA spontaneously and resulted in the fluorescence quenching of HSA. The stability of the HSA-SMT complex decreased with an increase in temperature. The binding of SMT to HSA induced alterations in the secondary structure of HSA, where the content of α-helix decreased from 61.0% of the free state to 59.0% of the compound state. The π-π, π-σ, and π-alkyl interactions between HSA and SMT were found to play important roles in maintaining the stability of the complex.

Antibiotic resistance and, accordingly, their pollution because of uncontrolled usage has emerged as a serious problem in recent years. Hence, there is an increased demand to develop robust, easy, and sensitive methods for rapid evaluation of antibiotics and their residues. Among different analytical methods, the aptamer-based biosensors (aptasensors) have attracted considerable attention because of good selectivity, specificity, and sensitivity. This review gives an overview about recently-developed aptasensors for antibiotic detection. The use of various aptamer assays to determine different groups of antibiotics, like β-lactams, aminoglycosides, anthracyclines, chloramphenicol, (fluoro)quinolones, lincosamide, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides are presented in this paper.

Dual fluorescent aptasensor for simultanous and quantitative detection of sulfadimethoxine and oxytetracycin residues in animal-derived foods tissues based on mesoporous silica.
Herein, we developed a dual fluorescent aptasensor based on mesoporous silica to simultaneously detect sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in animal-derived foods. We immobilized two types of aptamers modified with FAM and CY5 on the silica surface by base complementary pairing reaction with the cDNA modified with a carboxyl group and finally formed the aptasensor detection platform. Under optimal conditions, the detection range of the aptasensor for SDM and OTC was 3-150 ng/mL ( = 0.9831) and 5-220 ng/mL ( = 0.9884), respectively. The limits of detection for SDM and OTC were 2.2 and 1.23 ng/mL, respectively. The limits of quantification for SDM and OTC were 7.3 and 4.1 ng/mL, respectively. Additionally, the aptasensor was used to analyze spiked samples. The average recovery rates ranged from 91.75 to 114.65% for SDM and 89.66 to 108.94% for OTC, and all coefficients of variation were below 15%. Finally, the performance and practicability of our aptasensor were confirmed by HPLC, demonstrating good consistency. In summary, this study was the first to use the mesoporous silica-mediated fluorescence aptasensor for simultaneous detection of SDM and OTC, offering a new possibility to analyze other antibiotics, biotoxins, and biomolecules.

BACKGROUND
The impact of bilirubin in preterm infants is poorly understood. An animal model would assist in improving understanding. The Gunn rat lacks uridine diphosphate-glucuronylsyl transferase 1 and can be made acutely hyperbilirubinemic by injection of sulfodimethoxine (sulfa), a drug that displaces bilirubin from albumin and thus increases free bilirubin.
METHODS
On postnatal day (P) 5, Gunn rats either heterozygous (Nj) or homozygous (jj) for glucuronosyltransferase activity were injected with either saline or sulfa. Behavior and cerebellar weight were measured.
RESULTS
Pups did not show any signs of acute bilirubin encephalopathy. Pup weight dropped significantly on P8 only in the jj-sulfa group. Behavior was affected only in the jj-sulfa group. Cerebellar weight was significantly less in the jj-sulfa group.
CONCLUSION
The Gunn rat pup model may be a good model to study hyperbilirubinemia in preterm infants.

Nanoceria is a promising nanomaterial for the catalytic hydrolysis of a wide variety of substances. In this study, it was experimentally demonstrated for the first time that CeO nanostructures show extraordinary reactivity toward sulfonamide drugs (sulfadimethoxine, sulfamerazine, and sulfapyridine) in aqueous solution without any illumination, activation, or pH adjustment. Hydrolytic cleavage of various bonds, including S-N, C-N, and C-S, was proposed as the main reaction mechanism and was indicated by the formation of various reaction products, namely, sulfanilic acid, sulfanilamide, and aniline, which were identified by HPLC-DAD, LC-MS/MS, and NMR spectroscopy. The kinetics and efficiency of the ceria-catalyzed hydrolytic cleavage were dependent on the structure of the sulfonamide molecule and physicochemical properties of Nanoceria prepared by three different precipitation methods. However, in general, all three ceria samples were able to cleave SA drugs tested, proving the robust and unique surface reactivity toward these compounds inherent to cerium dioxide. The demonstrated reactivity of CeO to molecules containing sulfonamide or even sulfonyl (and similar) functional groups may be significant for both heterogeneous catalysis and environmentally important degradation reactions.

Deciphering the Protein, Modular Connections and Precision Medicine for Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction and Hypertension Based on TMT Quantitative Proteomics and Molecular Docking.
Exploring the potential biological relationships between heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and concomitant diseases has been the focus of many studies for the establishment of personalized therapies. Hypertension (HTN) is the most common concomitant disease in HFpEF patients, but the functional connections between HFpEF and HTN are still not fully understood and effective treatment strategies are still lacking. In this study, tandem mass tag (TMT) quantitative proteomics was used to identify disease-related proteins and construct disease-related networks. Furthermore, functional enrichment analysis of overlapping network modules was used to determine the functional similarities between HFpEF and HTN. Molecular docking and module analyses were combined to identify therapeutic targets for HFpEF and HTN. Seven common differentially expressed proteins (co-DEPs) and eight overlapping modules were identified in HFpEF and HTN. The common biological processes between HFpEF and HTN were mainly related to energy metabolism. Myocardial contraction, energy metabolism, apoptosis, oxidative stress, immune response, and cardiac hypertrophy were all closely associated with HFpEF and HTN. Epinephrine, sulfadimethoxine, chloroform, and prednisolone acetate were best matched with the co-DEPs by molecular docking analyses. Myocardial contraction, energy metabolism, apoptosis, oxidative stress, immune response, and cardiac hypertrophy were the main functional connections between HFpEF and HTN. Epinephrine, sulfadimethoxine, chloroform, and prednisolone acetate could potentially be effective for the treatment of HTN and HFpEF.

Antibiotic residues contained in poultry eggs pose threat to human health. However, the classes and concentrations of antibiotics in poultry egg in southwestern China is unknown due to insufficient monitoring and research. A total of 513 egg samples were collected from supermarkets and farm markets in Kunming city in 2020 and the levels of 7 antibiotics were analyzed using ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method. The linear correlation coefficients were above 0.990 for all antibiotics tested. The limits of detection and limits of quantification in poultry eggs were 0.002 to 0.010 μg/g and 0.007 to 0.033 μg/g, respectively. The average recoveries of the 7 analytes from poultry egg samples were 80.00 to 128.01%, with relative standard deviations of less than 13.97%. A total of 93 (18.13%) samples tested positive for antibiotics, with the highest concentration being 2.48 μg/g. The concentration range of ofloxacin, danofloxacin, difloxacin, sulfadimethoxine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, and sulfamethoxazole in poultry eggs was 0.01 to 0.37 μg/g, 0.06 to 0.48 μg/g, 0.05 to 0.29 μg/g, 0.03 to 0.16 μg/g, 0.06 to 1.00 μg/g, 0.05 to 0.37, and 0.07 to 2.48 μg/g, respectively. Sulfamonomethoxine was detected from hen eggs with the highest concentration level at 1.00 μg/g. Sulfamethoxazole was detected with the highest concentration level from both duck and quail eggs, at 1.87 and 2.48 μg/g, respectively. The antibiotic with the highest residue level in pheasant eggs was danofloxacin, which was 0.37 μg/g. Sulfamethoxypyridazine was identified in 30 samples with the highest positive rate of 5.85%, sulfadimethoxine was identified in 3 samples with the lowest positive rate of 0.58%. We observed that 7 targeted antibiotic residues in quail eggs and 3 targeted antibiotic residues in pheasant eggs. We also found that there were antibiotic residues in free-range hen eggs and the concentration was not low. The antibiotic with the highest residue level in free-range eggs was sulfamonomethoxine, which was 1.00 μg/g. These findings suggest that continual antibiotic residue monitoring of poultry eggs is essential in China.

Six healthy adult mares were each given an oral loading dose of ormetoprim(OMP)-sulfadimethoxine (SDM) at a dosage of 9.2 mg of OMP/kg and 45.8 mg of SDM/kg, followed by four maintenance doses of 4.6 mg of OMP/kg and 22.9 mg of SDM/kg, at 24 h intervals. Ormetoprim and SDM concentrations were measured in serum, synovial fluid, peritoneal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, urine and endometrium. The highest mean serum OMP concentration was 0.92 micrograms/mL 0.5 h after the first dose; the highest mean SDM concentration was 80.9 micrograms/mL 8 h after the first dose. The highest mean synovial fluid concentrations were 0.14 microgram of OMP/mL and 28.5 micrograms of SDM/mL 12 h after the first dose. The highest mean peritoneal fluid concentrations were 0.19 micrograms of OMP/mL 6 h after the first dose and 25.5 micrograms of SDM/mL 8 h after the fifth dose. The highest mean endometrial concentrations were 0.56 micrograms of OMP/g and 28.5 micrograms of SDM/g 4 h after the fifth dose. The mean cerebrospinal fluid concentrations were 0.08 micrograms of OMP/mL and 2.1 micrograms of SDM/mL 5 h after the fifth dose. Mean trough urine drug concentrations were greater than or equal to 0.4 micrograms of OMP/mL and greater than or equal to 172 micrograms of SDM/mL. Two of the mares were each given a single intravenous (IV) injection of OMP and SDM at a dosage of 9.2 mg of OMP/kg and 45.8 mg of SDM/kg. We studied the effect of sulfadiomethoxine and ormetoprim (Rofenaid 40) in combination with lasalocid (Avatec) and monensin (Coban) on mortality, weight gain, and feed conversion of 2592 male broilers to 47 days of age. Four shuttle treatments were utilized: 1) monensin feeding for the entire trial; 2) sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim feeding for the first 2 weeks, followed by lasalocid for the remainder of the trial; 3) sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim feeding for the first 2 weeks, followed by monensin; and 4) sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim feeding through week 3, then lasalocid for the remainder of the trial. No significant (P greater than .05) differences were observed in mortality among the four treatments. The combination of sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim plus lasalocid significantly (P less than .01) improved weight gain and final body weight, but the length of time that sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim were fed did not have any effect. Sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim plus monensin treatment resulted in better feed conversion as compared with the other treatments.

Bacterial infection and antimicrobial resistance are important constraints in the production and sustainability of farmed salmonids. This retrospective study aimed to describe the frequency of bacterial isolates and antimicrobial resistance profiles in salmonid aquaculture in Atlantic Canada. Bacterial isolates and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results assessed by disk diffusion testing were summarized for 18,776 Atlantic salmon () and rainbow trout () samples from 2291 unique cases submitted to the Atlantic Veterinary College, Aquatic Diagnostic Services Bacteriology Laboratory from 2000 to 2021. Kidney was the most commonly submitted tissue (60.29%, n = 11,320), and these specimens were mostly submitted as swabs (63.68%, n = 11,957). The most prevalent pathogens detected in these cases were type 1 (5.54%, n = 127), (2.10%, n = 48), (atypical) (1.66%, n = 38), and (1.22%, n = 28). Most bacterial isolates tested (n = 918) showed resistance to florfenicol, oxytetracycline, ormetoprim-sulfadimethoxine, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, but not to enrofloxacin. This report provides baseline data for antimicrobial surveillance programs that investigate emerging antimicrobial resistance trends in salmonid aquaculture in Atlantic Canada.
