Review
Stem cell biology has come of age. Unequivocal proof that stem cells exist in the haematopoietic system has given way to the prospective isolation of several tissue-specific stem and progenitor cells, the initial delineation of their properties and expressed genetic programmes, and the beginnings of their utility in regenerative medicine. Perhaps the most important and useful property of stem cells is that of self-renewal. Through this property, striking parallels can be found between stem cells and cancer cells: tumours may often originate from the transformation of normal stem cells, similar signalling pathways may regulate self-renewal in stem cells and cancer cells, and cancer cells may include 'cancer stem cells' - rare cells with indefinite potential for self-renewal that drive tumorigenesis.

First described in 2003 as and later in 2011 as , this rare vascular tumor is of intermediate malignant potential. It was officially included for the first time in the most recent World Health Organization's . It typically affects young adults with a predilection for the distal lower extremity. This tumor lacks morphologic features of vascular differentiation but shows unequivocal evidence of such differentiation with the use of relevant immunohistochemical stains such as FLI1, ERG, and CD31. Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma can be diagnostically challenging and might be confused with other tumors, such as epithelioid sarcoma. In this review we discuss the clinical, morphologic, and immunohistochemical features of this tumor with particular emphasis on the differential diagnosis. Salient molecular and prognostic features are also reviewed.

Review
In terrorist attacks and industrial catastrophes, management of a massive afflux of wounded must adhere to logistic imperatives while at the same time taking into account basic traumatology principles. This implies a firm, unequivocal, and precise doctrine for all stages of care. Medical and surgical triage allows a logical classification of victims according to severity of injury, the necessity of treatment and the degree of urgency. Triage should be early, dynamic, and lead to a categorization that optimally utilizes resources while ensuring efficient management.

Right-sided diverticulitis is uncommon in Western populations with few to zero reports on endoscopic correlations. Although ultrasound or imaging studies typically detect advanced forms to be differentiated from acute appendicitis and/or Crohn's disease, in more subtle presentations with an indication of urgent ileocolonoscopy, endoscopy may reliably establish an unequivocal diagnosis.

Review
Cholesterol-rich, apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins are now widely accepted as the most important causal agents of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Multiple unequivocal and orthogonal lines of evidence all converge on low-density lipoprotein and related particles as being the principal actors in the genesis of atherosclerosis. Here, we review the fundamental role of atherogenic apoB-containing lipoproteins in cardiovascular disease and several other humoral and parietal factors that are required to initiate and maintain arterial degeneration. The biology of foam cells and their interactions with high-density lipoproteins, including cholesterol efflux, are also briefly reviewed.

Review
The diagnosis of thymic carcinoma may pose significant problems not necessarily in the histopathological diagnosis but rather in assigning the thymus as specific origin. Often the tissue available for interpretation is obtained a mediastinocopic biopsy, which raises two different issues -minimal tissue and lack of specific features to make a carcinoma of thymic origin. In addition, if to that conundrum we add that there is no magic immunohistochemical stain that will unequivocally lead to the interpretation of thymic carcinoma, then we are left with a true clinical-radiological-pathological correlation. In this review, we will highlight some of those challenges that diagnostic surgical pathologists may encounter in the histopathological assessment of thymic carcinoma as well as in the staging of these tumors.

[8-vinyl]-Protochlorophyllide a1 was isolated from a Prochloron sp. associated with the host ascidian, Lissoclinum patella. To obtain sufficient amounts for identification of the purified pigment, suitable extraction procedures and HPLC systems were developed. The structure was finally elucidated by UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and NMR (rotating-frame Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy). [8-vinyl]-Protochlorophyllide a was originally detected only as an intermediate in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Although its presence as a light-harvesting pigment was previously suggested in some prochlorophytes and eukaryotic algae, this is the first unequivocal demonstration of [8-vinyl]-protochlorophyllide a in an oxygenic phototroph. We also show that [8-vinyl]-protochlorophyllide a occurs in Prochloron species of four other ascidians as well as in Micromonas pusilla and Prochlorococcus marinus. The possible role of this pigment in photosynthesis is discussed.
