Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) form a group of heterogeneous disorders that affect the kidneys, ureters and bladder, with frequent asynchronous presentations and multiple CAKUT associations in the same individual. Urinary tract formation is a complex process, dependent of the interaction of multiple genes and their sub-product. The same genic alterations can lead to different molecular expressions and different morphological anomalies. The ureterocele is a cystic dilation of the distal intramural ureter, resulting in obstruction of urine flow, dilation of the ureter and renal pelvis and loss of renal function. Two key steps in the urinary tract ontogenesis may be related to ureterocele development: formation and migration of the ureteric bud and its incorporation in the bladder. This review aims to describe the morphological, cellular and biochemical steps, as well as the genes involved in the occurrence of this anomaly.

Aim: The presence and clinical importance of vesicoureteric reflux in patients with a double collecting system are being questioned. Therefore, the role of voiding cystourethrography in the management of patients with ureterocele is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate patients with a ureterocele in terms of urinary tract infection (UTI) and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Material Methods: The cases who were admitted to the Pediatric Nephrology Clinic of Health Sciences University Tepecik Training and Research Hospital between 2012 and 2022 and were diagnosed with ureterocele were evaluated retrospectively. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were obtained from file records. Results: All patients diagnosed with ureterocele and voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) were evaluated. A total of 24 (female 13 (54.2%)) children were included. The reasons for admission were antenatal hydronephrosis in 13 (54.2%) patients, UTI in 9 (37.5%) patients, and incidentally diagnosed ureterocele in 2 (8.3%) patients. Urinary tract infection was observed in 20 patients at admission, recurrent UTI in 21 patients at follow-up, preoperative pyelonephritis in 12 patients. VUR was found in 11 patients, and severe VUR (≥stage 3) was found in 9 patients. Ten patients had ipsilateral hydronephrosis, and 14 patients had a double collecting system. The presence of VUR was found to be associated with female gender, UTI at admission, and recurrent UTI at follow-up (p < 0.05). However, there was no difference between groups with or without VUR in terms of ipsilateral hydronephrosis, scar formation, and the need for surgery (p > 0.05). Conclusions: We could not demonstrate any criteria to select patients to receive VCUG; on the other hand, VUR did not cause more kidney damage. Our study supports the need for more scientific data to determine management in patients with ureterocele.

OBJECTIVE
We purposed to review prenatal diagnoses of ureterocele, to determine the sonographic findings and additional abnormalities, and to illustrate the pregnancy outcomes of these patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
We reviewed the records of 24 patients with the diagnosis of ureterocele in our referral center between January 2010-March 2017. Prenatal sonographic findings, antenatal course, and postnatal follow-up were obtained.
RESULTS
The mean gestational age at first US diagnosis was 24.5 ± 2.9 weeks. 13 (54.1%) of fetuses were female, and 11 (45.9%) were male. Ureterocele was associated with the duplex kidney in 17 (70.8%), MCDK in 5 (20.8%) and hydronephrosis with a single system in 1 (4.2%) and pelvic kidney in 1 (4.2%) fetuses. Postnatal follow-up was achieved in 22 of 24 (91.6%) cases, and mean follow-up interval was 56 ± 14.2. Months. The diagnosis of ureterocele was confirmed in 22 (91.6%) cases postnatally. 15 of 22 (68%) cases were classified as extravesical ureterocele, and 7 (32%) cases were intravesical ureterocele. Postnatal confirmation of duplex kidney achieved in 16 of 17 (94.1%) patients. 17 (77.2%) patients were required surgical intervention, and 5 (22.8%) cases were managed conservatively. 15 of 16 (93.7%) cases who were diagnosed duplex kidney underwent surgery however 2 of 5 (40%) cases which were confirmed MCDK required an operation. Cystoscopic ureterocele incision was the initial approach for the surgical management and performed all of the cases which required surgery. It was curative in 10 of 17 (58.8%) patients and 7 (41.2%) cases needed to further operations. Ureteroselectomy and common-sheath ureteroneocystostomy was performed in 5 (29.1%) cases and. 2 (%11.7%) cases underwent partial nephrectomy.
CONCLUSION
Ureterocele can be accurately diagnosed by prenatal sonography, and it is a significant clue for the diagnosis of a duplex kidney. Postnatal prognosis depends on associated anomaly and presence of reflux and upper pole function.

A 52-year-old male was subjected to an F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) study for the evaluation of newly diagnosed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. An incidental non-FDG avid urinary bladder mass was detected, as well as an absent kidney. Ureterocele was suspected, but subsequently a seminal vesicle cyst was confirmed on a CT urogram.

INTRODUCTION
Ureterocele is a rare urogenital malformation. The treatment is variable and complicated as it depends on several factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the management and outcomes of children with ureterocele and to compare single system and duplex system ureteroceles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A retrospective study was conducted and all patients with ureterocele operated from January 1992 to December 2018 were included. The records of those included were assessed, and a detailed case record sheet was filled. The outcome parameters assessed were the persistence of symptoms and additional surgical procedure performed.
RESULTS
Forty-seven patients (28 boys and 19 girls) with a median age of presentation of 21 months were included. Four patients had bilateral ureterocele. Overall, 51 renal units with ureterocele were studied. Twenty renal units of the 31 renal units with duplex system underwent cystoscopic decompression, and of these, 8 (40%) needed a second procedure. Fourteen renal units of the remaining 20 renal units with single system underwent cystoscopy and decompression, and of these, 1 (7%) required another procedure (P = 0.024). Sixteen renal units had ectopic ureterocele, of which 9 (56%) underwent heminephrectomy/nephrectomy. Intravesical ureterocele was present in 35 renal units, of which only 2 (5.7%) underwent nephrectomy or heminephrectomy ( < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
Duplex system ureteroceles are more likely to require a second procedure following an endoscopic puncture. Units with ectopic ureterocele were more likely to need nephrectomy.

Ureterocelemay cause severe pyelo-ureteral obstruction with afebrile urinary tract infections in infants and children. Early decompressive treatment is advocated to reduce the risk of related renal and urinary tract damage. Endoscopic techniques of incision have been offered utilizing diathermic electrode. We adopted laser energy to release the obstruction of the ureterocele and reduce the need of further surgery. Our technique is described and results are presented, compared with a group of matched patients treated by diathermic energy. Decompression was performed by endoscopic multiple punctures at the basis of the ureterocele. Holmium YAG Laser was utilized with 0.5-0.8 joule energy, through 8-9.8F cystoscope under general anesthesia. The control group received ureterocele incision by diathermic energy through pediatric resettoscope. Foley indwelling catheter was removed after 18-24 h. Renal ultrasound was performed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up. Voiding cysto-urethrogram and radionuclide renal scan were done at 6-18 months in selected cases. Statistical analysis was utilized for data evaluation. From January 2012 to December 2017, 64 endoscopic procedures were performed: 49 were ectopic and 15 orthotopicureteroceles. Fifty-three were in duplex systems, mostly ectopic. Mean age at endoscopy was 6.3 months (1-168). Immediate decompression of the ureterocele was obtained, but in five cases (8%) a second endoscopic puncture was necessary at 6-18 months follow-up for recurrent dilatation. Urinary tract infections and refluxes occurred in 23.4 and 29.7% in the study group, compared to 38.5 and 61.5% in the 26 controls ( < . Further surgery was required in 12 patients (18%) at 1-5 years follow-up (10 in ectopic ureteroceles with duplex systems): seven ureteral reimplantation for reflux, five laparoscopic hemy-nephro-ureterectomy. Orthotopic ureteroceceles had better outcome. Secondary surgery was necessary in 13 patients (50.0%) of control group ( < . Early endoscopic decompression should be considered first line treatment of obstructing ureterocele in infants and children. Multiple punctures at the basis of the ureterocele, performed by low laser energy, is resulted a really minimally invasive treatment, providing immediate decompression of the upper urinary tract, and reducing the risk of further aggressive surgery.
