Definitions related to craniosynostosis:
  • A congenital disorder characterized by earlier than normal closure of some or all sutures of the infant skull.

  • Craniosynostosis refers to the premature closure of the cranial sutures. Primary craniosynostosis refers to the closure of one or more sutures due to abnormalities in skull development, and secondary craniosynostosis results from failure of brain growth.

  • Premature closure of cranial sutures with fusion of bone, resulting in small maldeveloped skull; used to describe multiple skull bone fusions. • (craniosynostoses) Premature closure of one or more CRANIAL SUTURES. It often results in plagiocephaly. Craniosynostoses that involve multiple sutures are sometimes associated with congenital syndromes such as ACROCEPHALOSYNDACTYLIA; and CRANIOFACIAL DYSOSTOSIS.

  • Craniosynostosis is premature fusion of one or more calvarial sutures. Premature fusion of sutures causes a characteristic skull deformity due to decreased growth in a direction perpendicular to the closed suture. It occurs in 1 of 2500 live births. There are several types, depending on which suture is fused.

  • Craniosynostosis (kray-nee-o-sin-os-TOE-sis) is a birth defect in which one or more of the fibrous joints between the bones of your baby's skull (cranial sutures) close prematurely (fuse), before your baby's brain is fully formed. Brain growth continues, giving the head a misshapen appearance.
    Mayo Clinic
Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2025
  • Craniosynostosis is the premature closure of one or more of the joints that connect the bones of a baby's skull (cranial sutures). Normally, the bones remain separate until about age 2, while the brain is growing. They then fuse together and stay connected throughout life. The closure is premature when it occurs before brain growth is...

  • Craniosynostosis, any of several types of cranial deformity--sometimes accompanied by other abnormalities--that result from the premature union of the skull vault bones. Craniosynostosis is twice as frequent in males than in females and is most often sporadic, although the defect may be familial....
