Definitions related to zygomycosis:
-
A rare mycosis caused by ubiquitous, opportunistic fungi of the order Mucorales, characterized by tissue infarction and necrosis due to invasion of the vasculature by hyphae. The spectrum of clinical manifestations depends on the route of infection and includes rhinocerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, renal, and disseminated forms. The disease is usually rapidly progressive and associated with high mortality.OrphaNetINSERM, 2021
-
Any infection due to a fungus of the Zygomycota phylum. The disease typically involves the rhino-facial-cranial area, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, skin, or less commonly other organ systems. The infecting fungi have a predilection for invading vessels of the arterial system, causing embolization and subsequent necrosis of surrounding tissue.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
Infection in humans and animals caused by fungi in the class Zygomycetes. It includes MUCORMYCOSIS and entomophthoramycosis. The latter is a tropical infection of subcutaneous tissue or paranasal sinuses caused by fungi in the order Entomophthorales. Phycomycosis, closely related to zygomycosis, describes infection with members of Phycomycetes, an obsolete classification.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
