OBJECTIVE
To improve the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment, reduce the incidence of complications, and provide the basis for clinicians to choose an appropriate treatment, this research explores the removal methods of the impacted denture in the esophagus by endoscopy.
METHODS
Based on the clinical information, treatment methods and complications of 72 patients with denture impaction in the esophagus admitted to our hospital from January 2016 to March 2021, which were divided into the group treated with painless endoscopy and the group treated with conventional endoscopy, retrospective analysis of the therapeutic effect and complications was conducted.
RESULTS
There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of denture removal rate ( > 0.05). There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of operating time and incidence rates of complications during and after the procedure. The operating time of the group treated with painless endoscopy was significantly shorter than the group treated with conventional endoscopy ( < 0.05). The incidence rates of complications during and after the procedure of the group treated with painless endoscopy were significantly lower than the group treated with conventional endoscopy ( < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
Compared with the conventional endoscopy, painless endoscopic management of denture impaction in the esophagus under general anesthesia with tracheal intubation improves the clinical efficacy and reduces the adverse reactions. Thus, it is worthy of clinical popularization and application.

BACKGROUND
Evidence regarding the associations of tooth loss and denture use with incident cognitive impairment is inconclusive in older adults, and few prospective studies have examined the potential interaction between tooth loss and denture use in these specific populations.
METHODS
Data were assessed from 17 079 cognitively normal older adults aged ≥65 years, participating in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. The outcome of interest was cognitive impairment (assessed by the Chinese version of Mini-Mental State Examination). The number of natural teeth and status of denture use were collected by a structural questionnaire.
RESULTS
A total of 6456 cases of cognitive impairment were recorded during 88 627 person-years of follow-up. We found that compared with participants with 20+ teeth, those with 10-19, 1-9, and 0 teeth had increased risks of incident cognitive impairment (p-trend < .001). Participants without dentures also had a higher risk of incident cognitive impairment, compared with those who wore dentures. Effect modification by denture use was observed (p-interaction = .010). Specifically, among those without dentures, the adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for participants with 10-19, 1-9, and 0 teeth were 1.19 (1.08, 1.30), 1.28 (1.17, 1.39), and 1.28 (1.16, 1.41), respectively, as compared to those with 20+ teeth. In contrary, among denture users, detrimental effect was only observed among those with 0 teeth (hazard ratio 1.14, 95% confidence interval: 1.16, 1.41).
CONCLUSIONS
In Chinese older adults, maintaining 20+ teeth is important for cognitive health; denture use would attenuate the detrimental effects of tooth loss, especially for partial tooth loss, on cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION
Dentures are worn by 20% of the United Kingdom population for both physical and psychological symptoms associated with tooth loss. However, significant morbidity and mortality can result if dentures are swallowed or aspirated. This 10-year review investigated the development of complications following denture aspiration or ingestion, and identified key learning points.
METHODS
The Medline database was searched for cases of denture ingestion or aspiration from October 1, 2009, to October 31, 2019. Search terms included "dental prosthesis, denture, dental plate, bridge and false teeth" and "swallow, ingest, eat, aspirate and inhale." Potential factors influencing the development of complications were assessed (hollow viscus perforation, fistula formation, abscess, bowel obstruction, necrosis, hemorrhage, and airway obstruction). Statistical analysis was performed using χ and Pearson correlation tests in R Studio. No ethical approval was required.
RESULTS
Eighty-five patients were identified from 77 case reports. Fourteen articles were excluded due to insufficient information. Complications were documented in 37.6% (n = 32) of patients with 2 cases resulting in death. Duration of symptoms over 1 day ( = .005) and delayed removal beyond 4 days post-ingestion ( = .017) was significantly associated with increased rates of complications. There was no significant association between complication rate and patient age, denture type, level of impaction, or radiolucency.
CONCLUSION
Denture aspiration or ingestion can have serious consequences. Factors impacting complication rate revolve around early recognition and treatment. Clinician awareness of the potential risks of dentures is paramount to early diagnosis. We recommend early intervention to reduce the morbidity associated with this unassuming device.

Denture stomatitis is a common inflammatory reaction, multifactorial etiology, which is usually associated with Candida species, particularly Candida albicans, due to its high virulence, ability to adhere and form biofilms on oral cavity tissues and denture surfaces. This article highlights the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and management strategies of Candida-associated denture stomatitis commonly encountered in dental practice.

Owing to economic conditions, removable dentures remain popular despite the discomfort and reduced chewing efficiency experienced by most denture wearers. However, there is little evidence to confirm that the level of mucosal load exceeds the pressure pain threshold. This discrepancy stimulated us to review the current state of knowledge on the biomechanics of mastication with complete removable dentures. The loading beneath dentures was analyzed in the context of denture foundation characteristics, salivary lubrication, occlusal forces, and the biomechanics of mastication. The analysis revealed that the interpretation of data collected in vivo is hindered due to the simultaneous overlapping effects of many variables. In turn, problems with determining the pressure beneath a denture and analyzing frictional processes constitute principal limitations of in vitro model studies. Predefined conditions of finite element method simulations should include the effects of oblique mastication forces, simultaneous detachment and sliding of the denture on its foundation, and the stabilizing role of balancing contacts. This review establishes that previous investigations may have failed because of their unsubstantiated assumption that, in a well-working balanced occlusion, force is only exerted perpendicular to the occlusal plane, allowing the denture to sit firmly on its foundation. Recent improvements in the simulation of realistic biomechanical denture behavior raise the possibility of assessing the effects of denture design on the pressures and slides beneath the denture.

The antimicrobial effects of denture adhesives containing novel surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) fillers were assessed. We prepared denture adhesives containing S-PRG (particle sizes: 1 and 3 µm; quantities: 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%). We evaluated acid buffering capacity, ion release, and antimicrobial effects of denture adhesives with and without S-PRG. Significantly higher pH changes were observed in 1 µm S-PRG adhesives than in 3 µm S-PRG adhesives. Adhesives containing 7.5 and 10 wt% S-PRG exhibited significantly higher ion release than adhesives with 5 wt% S-PRG. The 1µm-10wt% S-PRG denture adhesive exhibited significantly lower colony-forming units on the denture adhesive contact surface than in the control group; additionally, it exhibited excellent acid buffering capacity, ion release properties, and antimicrobial effect against C. albicans, C. glabrata, S. mutans, and A. naeslundii. Longer contact periods resulted in significantly lower adhesion of Candida albicans to the denture base resin treated with denture adhesive.

There are several benefits in using adhesive technique in removable prosthodontics as well as fixed prosthodontics. Previous studies have examined denture-base surface treatments that improve bond strength between a denture base resin and autopolymerizing repair resin. Dichloromethane and ethyl acetate are organic solvents that swell the denture base surface, thereby permitting diffusion of the acrylic resin. The optimal treatment duration is 5-10 s for dichloromethane and 120 s for ethyl acetate. It was reported that the bond durability of dichloromethane was superiorto that of ethyl acetate. Bonding between metal components and the denture base resin has an important role in the longevity of removable prostheses. The combination of metal conditioners and alumina air-abrasion is effective in fabricating and repairing removable dentures. Acidic monomers (4-META and MDP) are appropriate for base metal alloys, including Co-Cr alloy and titanium alloy, while thione monomers (MTU-6 and VBATDT) are suitable for noble metal alloys such as gold alloy and silver-palladium-copper-gold (Ag-Pd-Cu-Au) alloy. As an alternative to conventional restorations, resin-bonded restorations can provide precisely parallel guide planes with well-made rest seats. Careful consideration should be paid to stabilizing loosened teeth by fixing them with resin-bonded splints or fixed partial dentures.

BACKGROUND
Appropriated denture hygiene is a predictive factor for longevity of rehabilitation treatment and maintenance of the oral mucosal health. Although, disinfectant solutions are commonly used as denture cleansers, the impact of these solutions on acrylic resin-based dentures remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate, in vitro, the antibiofilm activity of complete denture hygiene solutions and their effects on physical and mechanical properties of acrylic resin.
METHODOLOGY
For antibiofilm activity measurement acrylic resin specimens were contaminated with Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Streptococcus mutans. After biofilm growth, the specimens were assigned to the hygiene solutions: Distilled water (Control); 0.2% Sodium hypochlorite (SH); Efferdent Power Clean Crystals (EPC) and 6.25% Ricinus communis (RC). The viability of microorganisms was evaluated by agar plate counts. In parallel, physical, and mechanical properties of the acrylic resin were evaluated after simulating a 5-year period of daily immersion in the previously mentioned solutions. The changes in surface roughness, color, microhardness, flexural strength, impact strength, sorption and solubility were evaluated. Data were compared by ANOVA followed by the Tukey test or Kruskal-Wallis followed by the Dunn test depending on the distribution (α=0.05).
RESULTS
Regarding antibiofilm action, SH eliminated all microorganisms while EPC and RC exhibited moderate action against S. mutans (p=0.001) and C. glabrata (p<0.001), respectively. Relative to effects on the physical and mechanical properties of the acrylic resin, RC led to higher values of color change (p=0.030), hardness (p<0.001), surface roughness (p=0.006) and flexural strength (p<0.001). Moreover, RC induced the highest values of changes in solubility (p<0.001). EPC promoted greater changes in surface morphology, whereas immersion in SH retained the initial appearance of the acrylic resin surface. All hygiene solutions reduced the impact strength (p<0.05).
CONCLUSION
SH presented the most effective antibiofilm activity. In addition, changes on properties were observed after immersion in RC, which were considered within acceptable limits.

PURPOSE
To study the effects of denture adhesive upon denture micromovements in three dimensions during the chewing of hard, sticky, and tough food items observed using a novel method involving an electromagnetic articulograph (EMA) speech research system.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Ten volunteers (mean age 60.9 ± 10.4 years) with fair- or poor-fitting complete maxillary dentures were enrolled. Chewing experiments were conducted using two treatments (adhesive or no-adhesive control) and three foods: carrots (hard), raisins (sticky), and processed meat stick (tough). Denture micromovement was measured through a novel application of a Northern Digital Wave EMA System. Three-dimensional denture position was captured during mastication using three sensors embedded into a replica denture for each subject. Following individual characterization of a "home" reference position, the Euclidean Distances from Home (DfH) were calculated for each recorded sample of the chewing experiments. The DfH at each sample represented the denture movement for that 1/100th of a second of the activity. The DfH data were then summarized as the mean DfH, the maximum DfH, and total distance traveled by the denture. Several thresholds were also analyzed, including the percent of time that the DfH ≥1.5 mm, ≥2.0 mm, and ≥2.5 mm.
RESULTS
With adhesive treatment, the mean DfH of dentures during chewing was reduced by 26.8% for carrot, 30.3% for raisin, and 31.0% for meat stick, when compared with no-adhesive treatment (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). Similar results were also seen for the maximum DfH and total distance travelled endpoints across foods. For the threshold endpoints, adhesive treatment was associated with a statistically significant reduction in denture micromovements at all three thresholds across foods. At the threshold of DfH ≥ 1.5 mm, adhesive treatment was associated with a reduction in micromovement by 61.6%, 56.2%, and 70.0% with carrot, raisin, and meat stick, respectively (p ≤ 0.004 for all comparisons).
CONCLUSIONS
Observations of denture movement using the Wave EMA System were able to differentiate systematically between adhesive treatment and no-adhesive treatment for denture micromovements during different chewing challenges. Use of adhesive was associated with statistically significant reductions in denture micromovements for hard, sticky, and tough foods as measured with both distance and threshold endpoints.

OBJECTIVES
The study objectives were: 1) to develop a masticatory index for evaluating masticatory ability in patients wearing a dental prosthesis, including complete dentures (CD), removable partial denture (RPD), and fixed partial denture (FPD), 2) to test the reliability and validity of the index, and 3) to determine whether the index better reflected patients' masticatory ability compared with conventional subjective and objective measures.
METHODS
The present cross-sectional study consisted of 2 phases: 1) developing the Chulalongkorn University masticatory index (CUMI) consisting of 20 food items in 5 masticatory difficulty grades using a 3-point Likert scale, and 2) application of the CUMI in 110 patients wearing a dental prosthesis, including CD, RPD, and FPD (control group). The CUMI test-retest reliability was reevaluated 2 weeks later. The convergent validity was compared with objective masticatory performance evaluated with a standard peanut chewing test, and subjective eating impacts evaluated by the Oral Impacts on Daily Performances Index. Oral and denture status were determined clinically. The associations between CUMI score, peanut particle size, and eating impact score was identified using Spearman's correlation coefficient. To evaluate discriminant validity, the associations between masticatory ability measurements and oral and denture status were analyzed using regression analyses.
RESULTS
The CUMI's Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient values were 0.89 and 0.95, respectively. The convergent validity was shown by significant associations between the increased CUMI score, smaller peanut particle size and decreased eating impact score. Multivariable analyses found that the CUMI score, peanut particle size, and percentage of having an eating impact were significantly associated with the number of remaining teeth and posterior occluding pairs, and type and quality of dental prosthesis. However, the CUMI demonstrated better discriminant validity because significant dose-response relationships were found only between the decreased CUMI score and increased tooth loss severity, and unacceptable denture quality. Adjusted R2 values of the CUMI models were the highest, followed by those of peanut particle size and eating impact.
CONCLUSION
CUMI is a reliable and valid tool to evaluate masticatory ability of patients wearing a dental prosthesis, including CD, RPD, and FPD. Due to a better discriminant validity, the CUMI better reflects masticatory ability of patients compared with conventional subjective and objective masticatory ability measures.
