There is absence knowledge about the effects of lactation trimester and parity on eating behavior, production and efficiency of dairy cows. Objective of this study was to identify and characterize in 340 dairy cows, the 20% high efficient (HE), 20% low efficient (LE) and 60% mid efficient (ME) cows according to their individual residual feed intake (RFI) values, within and between lactation trimesters and between 1st and 2nd parities. Efficiency effect within each lactation trimester, was exhibited in daily dry matter intake (DMI), eating rate and meal size, that were the highest in LE cows, moderate in the ME cows and lowest in the HE group. Daily eating time, meal frequency, yields of milk and energy-corrected milk (ECM) and BW were similar in the three efficiency groups within each trimester. The lower efficiency of the LE cows in each trimester attributes to their larger metabolic energy intake, heat production and energy losses. In subgroup of 52 multiparous cows examined along their 1st and 2nd trimesters, milk and ECM production, DMI, eating behavior and efficiency traits were similar with high Pearson's correlation (r=0.78 to 0.89) between trimesters. In another subgroup of 42 multiparous cows measured at their 2nd and 3rd trimesters, milk and ECM yield, DMI and eating time were reduced (P<0.01) at the 3rd trimester, but eating rate, meal frequency and meal size remained similar with high Pearson's correlation (r=0.74 to 0.88) between trimesters. In subgroup of 26 cows measured in 1st and 2nd parities, DMI, BW, milk and ECM yield, and ECM/DMI increased in the 2nd lactation, but eating behavior and RFI traits were similar in both parities. These findings encourage accurate prediction of DMI based on a model that includes eating behavior parameters, together with individual measurement of ECM production. This can be further used to identify HE cows in commercial herd, a step necessary for potential genetic selection program aimed to improve herd efficiency.

BACKGROUND
Nulliparity is associated with lower birthweight, but few studies have examined how within-mother changes in risk factors impact this association.
METHODS
We used longitudinal electronic medical record data from a hospital-based cohort of consecutive singleton live births from 2002-2010 in Utah. To reduce bias from unobserved pregnancies, primary analyses were limited to 9484 women who entered nulliparous from 2002-2004, with 23,380 pregnancies up to parity 3. Unrestricted secondary analyses used 101,225 pregnancies from 45,212 women with pregnancies up to parity 7. We calculated gestational age and sex-specific birthweight z-scores with nulliparas as the reference. Using linear mixed models, we estimated birthweight z-score by parity adjusting for pregnancy-specific sociodemographics, smoking, alcohol, prepregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain, and medical conditions.
RESULTS
Compared with nulliparas', infants of primiparas were larger by 0.20 unadjusted z-score units [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18, 0.22]; the adjusted increase was similar at 0.18 z-score units [95% CI 0.15, 0.20]. Birthweight continued to increase up to parity 3, but with a smaller difference (parity 3 vs. 0 β = 0.27 [95% CI 0.20, 0.34]). In the unrestricted secondary sample, there was significant departure in linearity from parity 1 to 7 (P < 0.001); birthweight increased only up to parity 4 (parity 4 vs. 0 β = 0.34 [95% CI 0.31, 0.37]).
CONCLUSIONS
The association between parity and birthweight was non-linear with the greatest increase observed between first- and second-born infants of the same mother. Adjustment for changes in weight or chronic diseases did not change the relationship between parity and birthweight.

While much previous work linking fertility history with late-life cognition has focused on a narrow set of cognitive measures and/or has used modest sample sizes in the analysis, our paper expands the size and scope of these linkages by analyzing cognitive function across five domains and precisely estimating gendered patterns between men and women. Results point to important gendered associations between parity and cognition: having children is likely associated with better cognitive function for fathers in all five domains. However, mothers show worse cognitive function in some domains (i.e., numeric memory, prospective memory, and fluid intelligence) than childless women. We explore the possibility of confounding in these associations and rule out the effects of genetic cognitive ability on fertility. We also find that adding controls for educational attainment differ by gender-strengthening associations between parity and cognition for men and largely eliminating them for women. The findings support previous work done on how life course contexts may link to the risk of dementia or cognitive impairment, highlighting parity as potential protective or risk factors to parents' cognitive health. The use of five cognitive domains yields variations in results, giving implications on measure selection of cognitive function and calling for replicated work covering more cognitive domains.

The objectives of this study were to determine by-parity nonproductive female days (NPD or NPDs) and mating and culling measurements, to determine correlations between by-parity NPDs, mating and culling measurements and herd productivity measurements, and to compare by-parity NPDs between three herd groups (105 herds) with differing reproductive productivities. NPD was defined as the number of days when mated females were neither gestating nor lactating. Correlation analysis and mixed-effects models were performed. On the basis of the 25th and 75th percentiles of pigs weaned per mated female per year, three herd groups were formed: high-, intermediate-, and low-performing herds. The mean NPD of 105 breeding herds (mean +/- SEM) was 52.7 +/- 1.6 days. The NPDs in parities 1, 6 and > or = 7 were higher than those in parities 0, 2, 3 and 4 (P<0.05). High-performing herds had a higher farrowing percentage and lower percentage of reserviced females than low-performing herds (P<0.05). Lower by-parity NPDs were correlated with lower percentages of reserviced females, higher farrowing percentages and lower culling rates from parities 1 to 5 (P<0.05). High-performing herds had NPDs that were > 25 days lower in parities 0 to 3 than low-performing herds (P<0.05). High-performing herds had lower culling rates in parities 2 to 5 and higher culling rates in parities 6 and > or = 7 than low-performing herds (P<0.05). The present study indicates that monitoring the by-parity NPD and mating and culling measurements is a good tool for improvement of herd productivity.

INTRODUCTION
Provider bias has become an important topic of family planning research over the past several decades. Much existing research on provider bias has focused on the ways providers restrict access to contraception. Here, we propose a distinction between the classical "downward" provider bias that discourages contraceptive use and a new conception of "upward" provider bias that occurs when providers pressure or encourage clients to adopt contraception.
METHODS
Using cross-sectional data from reproductive-aged women in Burkina Faso, we describe lifetime prevalence of experiencing provider encouragement to use contraception due to provider perceptions of high parity (a type of upward provider bias) and provider discouragement from using contraception due to provider perceptions of low parity (a type of downward provider bias). We also examine associations between sociodemographic characteristics and experiences of provider encouragement to use contraception due to perceptions of high parity.
RESULTS
Sixteen percent of participants reported that a provider had encouraged them to use contraception due to provider perceptions of high parity, and 1% of participants reported that a provider had discouraged them from using contraception because of provider perceptions of low parity. Being married, being from the rural site, having higher parity, and having attended the 45th-day postpartum check-up were associated with increased odds of being encouraged to use contraception due to provider perceptions of high parity.
CONCLUSION
We find that experiences of upward provider bias linked to provider perceptions of high parity were considerably more common in this setting than downward provider bias linked to perceptions of low parity. Research into the mechanisms through which upward provider bias operates and how it may be mitigated is imperative to promote contraceptive autonomy.

BACKGROUND
Older females show greater cognitive gains from physical activity (PA) than males, which may be related to long-term consequences of female-specific reproductive events (eg, pregnancy) on cognitive health.
METHODS
To determine whether previous parity could moderate the relationship between PA and cognitive decline in older women, we conducted secondary analyses of data from the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study. We tested whether the association between average PA over 10 years and cognition (Modified Mini-Mental State Examination [3MS]) and executive functioning (digit symbol substitution test [DSST]) over 10 years varied by previous parity (nulliparity, low parity, medium parity, and grand multiparity). An analysis of covariance was performed with cognition (average and change over 10 years) as the dependent variables, parity as a categorical predictor, average PA as a continuous predictor, and a set of relevant covariates.
RESULTS
Significant interactions were found between PA and parity group for all 4 comparisons: average 3MS (p = .014), average DSST (p = .032), change in 3MS (p = .016), and change in DSST (p = .017). Simple slope analyses indicated the positive relationship between PA and average 3MS and DSST was only significant in the nulliparity and grand multiparity groups, and the positive relationship between PA and change in 3MS and DSST was only significant in the grand multiparity group.
CONCLUSION
The findings suggest the relationship between self-reported walking and cognitive performance was strongest in the groups at risk for cognitive decline and dementia, the nulliparous and grand multiparous groups.

BACKGROUND/AIM
The aims of this study were to determine the levels of the total antioxidant status (TAS), the total oxidant status (TOS), the oxidative stress index (OSI), and the concentration of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and M (IgM) in colostrum, and evaluate relationships between these parameters and maternal age, maternal parity, and infant sex.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The analysis was performed in serum samples of colostrum which were collected from 90 mothers on the first day of lactation between 10:00 and 12:00 AM
RESULTS
The measurements established that no significant association existed between the TAS level of colostrum and parity, maternal age, or infant sex. However, mothers 18 to 30 years of age had significantly lower colostrum TOS and OSI levels compared with mothers older than 30 years of age. IgA and IgM values of the colostrum of primiparous mothers were significantly higher than those of multiparous mothers, whereas no correlations existed with the age of the mother. Additionally, significantly higher colostrum IgA and IgM values were observed in female infants fed colostrum compared with male infants.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, sex-based hormonal changes in mothers during pregnancy may be associated with the different colostral immunoglobulin levels for male and female infants.

Research about mare's milk is mainly focused on quality and information about quantity is incomplete partly due to the lack of a consensus on the method of measuring milk yield. The live weight, body condition at foaling and age of mares are factors influencing milk yield. The influence of mare parity, however, remains unclear. Over a period of 2 years (2018-2019), milk yield was evaluated on 65 mares (51 multiparous and 13 primiparous). Mares and foals were kept in a group at pasture. One method of milk yield measurement and one proxy method were applied; milking and weight-suckle-weight (WSW), respectively. The procedure was performed at five timepoints during the lactation period (3-30-60-90 and 180 days) without repetition. The relevance of WSW was addressed by studying the correlation between the two methods on 23 individuals. Factors influencing milk yield, through milking data, were studied on 57 individuals. Data was divided into two subsets. The first was an explanatory matrix containing the live weight of mares 24 h after parturition, parity, age, year of lactation and foal gender. The second was a response matrix containing data from milking at the five timepoints of the lactation. A correlation was found (RV = 0.41) between milking and WSW at day 3, however no correlation was found for other timepoints (RV ≤ 0.15). The live weight of the mare 24 h after foaling, age and parity appeared to have a significant impact on milk production (P < 0.05). Thus, older or multiparous mares showed a higher milk yield than younger or primiparous mares. In addition, mares with a higher live weight after foaling produced more milk than those with a lower live weight. Overall, results can lead us to two main conclusions. First, the WSW method performed at five different timepoints of the lactation, but without repeated measurements, is not an efficient way to estimate the milk yield of mares. Secondly, results concerning the live weight and age of mares were in accordance with previous studies. The influence of parity was also highlighted, confirming trends showed by other authors. Age and parity are closely related in our population, making it difficult to differentially assess their effects. Being able to identify the impact of both factors independently would benefit several sectors of the horse industry from sport to mare milk producers.

Dairy products are the major source of odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFAs), a group of nutrients with emerging health benefits. The animal diet is known to influence milk fat OBCFAs of dairy cows; however, little is known about the effects of physiological factors. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of parity and lactation stage on OBCFAs in milk fat of dairy cows. Holstein dairy cows (n = 157) were selected according to parity (first, second, third, or greater) and days in milk (DIM) (≤21 DIM, 21 < DIM ≤ 100, 100 < DIM ≤ 200, >200 DIM). All cows were fed the same total mixed ration for three weeks. Milk samples were collected during the last three days of each lactation stage for fatty acid (FA) analyses via gas chromatography. Results showed that first- and second-parity cows displayed significantly higher proportions and yields of iso-14:0, iso-15:0, iso-16:0, total iso-FA, and total branched-chain FA (P < 0.05) compared with other parities. The proportions of C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 were also greater in first-parity cows (P < 0.05), while the yields of C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 were similar among different parities (P > 0.05). The proportions of total OBCFAs were greater in first- and second-parity cows (P < 0.05), whereas the highest yield was observed in second-parity cows. Lactation dairy cows in ≤ 21 DIM group displayed lower proportions of iso-13:0, anteiso-13:0, C13:0, iso-14:0, C15:0, iso-16:0, total iso-FA, and total OBCFAs compared with that of the other groups (P < 0.05), and also lower yields of iso-14:0 and iso-16:0 (P < 0.05). In contrast, C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 proportions and yields were higher in dairy cows with ≤ 21 DIM (P < 0.05). Iso-17:0 and anteiso-17:0 were not affected by lactation stage (P > 0.05). Taken together, our data showed that both parity and lactation stage have considerable effects on milk fat OBCFAs of dairy cows. In summary, first- and second-parity cows had higher milk OBCFAs compared with later parity cows, and OBCFAs with medium chain lengths were lower in dairy cows with ≤ 21 DIM, while C17:0 and C17:1 cis-9 were higher. These findings show that milk OBCFA contents are differentially modulated by physiological state. They will be useful in future studies that seek to alter OBCFA composition of Holstein dairy cow milk fats.

BACKGROUND
Association between parity and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk has been investigated by several epidemiological studies but results are controversial, yet a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of this association has not been reported so far.
METHODS
Relevant published studies of parity and CRC were identified using MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science databases through end of April 2013. Two authors independently assessed eligibility and extracted data. Eleven prospective studies reported relative risk (RR) estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of CRC risk associated with parity. We pooled the RR from individual studies using fixed- or random-effects models and carried out heterogeneity and publication bias analyses.
RESULTS
The summary RR for the ever parity vs. nulliparous was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.88-1.02), with no heterogeneity (Q = 9.04, P = 0.443, I (2) = 0.5%). Likewise, no significant association was yielded for the highest vs. lowest parity number (RR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.89-1.17), with moderate heterogeneity (Q = 17.48, P = 0.094, I (2) = 37.1%). Dose-response analysis still indicated no effect of parity on CRC risk and the summary RR of per one livebirth was 0.99 (95% CI: 0.96-1.02), with moderate of heterogeneity (Q = 16.50, P<0.021, I (2) = 57.6%). Similar results were observed among all the subgroup analyses. No evidence of publication bias and significant heterogeneity between subgroups were detected by meta-regression analyses.
CONCLUSION
Results of this dose-response meta-analysis of prospective studies found that there was little evidence of an association between parity and CRC risk.
