  • A species of strictly anaerobic, Gram positive, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Firmicutes. This species is motile, produces the type E toxin, can only grow in the absence of oxygen, produces butyric acid, forms endospores and ferments granulose. C. butyricum is a causative agent of botulism.
