Definitions related to multiple myeloma:
-
(myeloma, plasma cell, malignant) A malignant neoplasm of the bone marrow composed of plasma cells.CDISC TerminologyClinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC), 2021

A malignancy of mature PLASMA CELLS engaging in monoclonal immunoglobulin production. It is characterized by hyperglobulinemia, excess Bence-Jones proteins (free monoclonal IMMUNOGLOBULIN LIGHT CHAINS) in the urine, skeletal destruction, bone pain, and fractures. Other features include ANEMIA; HYPERCALCEMIA; and RENAL INSUFFICIENCY.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that begins in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell. These cells are part of your immune system, which helps protect the body from germs and other harmful substances. In time, myeloma cells collect in the bone marrow and in the solid parts of bones. No one knows the exact causes of multiple myeloma, but it is more common in older people and African Americans. It can run in families. Common symptoms may include Bone pain, often in the back or ribs; Fractures (broken bones); Weakness or fatigue; Weight loss; Frequent infections and fevers; Feeling very thirsty; Frequent urination. Doctors diagnose multiple myeloma using lab tests, imaging tests, and a bone marrow biopsy. Your treatment depends on how advanced the disease is and whether you have symptoms. If you have no symptoms, you may not need treatment right away. If you have symptoms, you may have chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, radiation, or targeted therapy. Targeted therapy uses drugs or other substances that attack specific cancer cells with less harm to normal cells. NIH: National Cancer InstituteMedlinePlusU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
-
(plasma cell myeloma) A bone marrow-based plasma cell neoplasm characterized by a serum monoclonal protein and skeletal destruction with osteolytic lesions, pathological fractures, bone pain, hypercalcemia, and anemia. Clinical variants include non-secretory myeloma, smoldering myeloma, indolent myeloma, and plasma cell leukemia. (WHO, 2001)NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells that produce monoclonal immunoglobulin and invade and destroy adjacent bone tissue. Common manifestations include lytic lesions in bones causing pain and/or fractures, renal insufficiency, hypercalcemia, anemia, and recurrent infections. Diagnosis typically requires demonstration of M-protein...Merck & Co., Inc., 2020

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a debilitating malignancy that is part of a spectrum of diseases ranging from monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) to plasma cell leukemia. First described in 1848, MM is characterized by a proliferation of malignant plasma cells and a subsequent overabundance of monoclonal paraprotein (M protein).WebMD, 2019

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs.Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research

Multiple myeloma is a form of cancer that occurs due to abnormal and uncontrolled growth of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Some people with multiple myeloma, especially those with early stages of the condition, have no concerning signs or symptoms. When present, the most common symptom is anemia, which can be associated with fatigue...National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences

Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell dyscrasia characterized by terminally differentiated plasma cells, infiltration of the bone marrow by plasma cells, and the presence of a monoclonal Ig or Ig fragment in the serum and/or urine. It is usually associated with osteolytic bone disease, anemia, and renal failure. A: serum protein...Athenahealth, Inc., 2019
