Subclass of:
Lymphoproliferative Disorders
Definitions related to tumor lysis syndrome:
-
A condition of metabolic abnormalities that result from a spontaneous or therapy-related cytolysis of tumor cells. Tumor lysis syndrome typically occurs in aggressive, rapidly proliferating lymphoproliferative disorders. Burkitt lymphoma and T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia are commonly associated with this syndrome. Metabolic abnormalities include hyperuricemia, lactic acidosis, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia and may result in renal failure, multiple organ failure, and death.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A condition that can occur after treatment of a fast-growing cancer, especially certain leukemias and lymphomas (cancers of the blood). As tumor cells die, they break apart and release their contents into the blood. This causes a change in certain chemicals in the blood, which may cause damage to organs, including the kidneys, heart, and liver.NCI Dictionary of Cancer TermsU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A syndrome resulting from cytotoxic therapy, occurring generally in aggressive, rapidly proliferating lymphoproliferative disorders. It is characterized by combinations of hyperuricemia, lactic acidosis, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
-
Multiple metabolic abnormalities resulting from tumor cell cytolysis characterized typically by hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, hyperuricemia, and impaired renal function.NICHD Pediatric TerminologyU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A disorder characterized by metabolic abnormalities that result from a spontaneous or therapy-related cytolysis of tumor cells.Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse EventsU.S. National Institutes of Health, 2021
-
Tumor lysis syndrome refers to the constellation of metabolic disturbances that may follow the initiation of cancer treatment. It usually occurs in patients with bulky, rapidly proliferating, treatment-responsive tumors.WebMD, 2019
-
Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is defined as a combination of metabolic and electrolyte abnormalities that occurs in patients with cancer, usually after the initiation of cytotoxic treatment but also spontaneously. It is characterized by excessive cell lysis resulting in hyperuricemia, hyperphosphatemia, hyperkalemia, and hypocalcemia. TLS...Athenahealth, Inc., 2019
